HISTORICAL NOTE
The Committee on Academic Freedom and Faculty Responsibility was established as a standing university committee by ETSU President Arther H. DeRosier, Jr., in 1977 with the charge indicated in its title. Composed of faculty members selected from across campus, the committee has met infrequently over the years, generally when an action occurs requiring its consideration such as the promotion case of Bernard J. Kerr with which the present records are concerned.

The Committee on Academic Freedom and Faculty Responsibility Records contains materials related to Bernard J. Kerr's hearing regarding his promotion to assistant professor and memoranda, reports, minutes, student evaluations, research articles and miscellaneous records documenting the administrative activities of the Committee on Academic Freedom and Faculty Responsibility.
