HISTORICAL NOTE
The Urban Appalachian Council was formed by the union of the Appalachian Committee and the Appalachian Identity Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Some of the members of the council have been involved with various Appalachian causes since the late l950's. In the mid-1960's, the Conference on Appalachian Migrants led to the United Appalachian Cincinnati. By the beginning of the 1970's, the Appalachian Committee was formed to increase the programs for Appalachian migrants. The Urban Appalachian Council was formed February 28, 1974 and was devoted to increased recognition of the Appalachian migrants as a minority and to provide educational assistance and employment.
The Identity Center was established by United Appalachian Cincinnati in the mid-l960's in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood and is still providing services to the community.
