BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Richard Blaustein is a professor of sociology and anthropology at East Tennessee State University. He received his B.A. from Brooklyn College in 1966 and continued his education at Indiana University, receiving his M.A. in 1969 and his Ph.D. in 1975 in folklore.

Blaustein has had an interest in country music and Appalachia since his high school days in Brooklyn, New York. Blaustein's interest led to his involvement in the Old Time Country Radio Reunion, an annual event held in Jonesborough, Tennessee, which he has directed since its inception in 1979. He also has been active, both as an organizer and as a performer, in the Homefolks Festival, held at East Tennessee State University in the spring of 1978, 1979, 1984 and 1985. A fiddle player, Blaustein regularly attends fiddlers' conventions and performs with an old time band, the Dixie Dewdrops.

With an interest in country music, and training in anthropology and folklore, Blaustein has been active in studying and preserving the Appalachian culture since he began teaching anthropology at East Tennessee State University in 1970. From 1978 through 1981 Blaustein worked with the Folk

Artists-in-the-Schools program. He helped area public school teachers introduce traditional music and dance, folk art, and oral history interviewing techniques to school children. A series of grants from the Jonesborough Office of Cultural Affairs, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Tennessee Arts Commission supported this effort. In 1983 Blaustein was appointed the director for the Institute for Appalachian Affairs at ETSU; the following year, he was named director of the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services. He remained in the latter position until July of 1992.
