Provenance: The Tennessee Civil War Centennial Commission Collection was given to Sherrod Library, East Tennessee State University by Mrs. L. W. McCown on March 26, 1965. The collection was transferred to Archives of Appalachia on December 1978.

Access: The collection is open for research.

HISTORICAL NOTE

The Tennessee Civil War Centennial Commission was established to celebrate the Civil War centennial. The commission had the additional responsibility of gathering material from each county on activities that occurred in those counties. The commission was established by an Act of the General Assembly, and functioned through the services of the State Library and Archives.

Mrs. L. W. McCown was appointed chairperson of the Washington County Civil War Centennial Commission. She refused the appointment but did agree to serve on the commission as a member.

The collection contains published material of the state commission and correspondence of Mrs. McCown and members of the state commission.
