BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Peter Range immigrated from Pennsylvania and Virginia and settled on Knob Creek in Washington County, Tennessee, in 1779. He built a two-story log house and then, in 1793, the stone house which still stands. His descendants became prominent members of the community in Johnson City and Washington County, Tennessee, thereafter. The collection contains papers from Peter Range descendant, Harry Garner Range, Sr., and his family. He was the son of James Jacob and Bertha Johnson Range, and was born in Johnson City, Tennessee on February 17, 1893 in the house on the corner of Spring and Walnut Streets. He attended Columbus Powell and Science Hill High School. On July 10, 1915 he married Rita Smith, the daughter of James Hamilton and May Shull Smith of Butler, Tennessee. The Ranges had three children: Harry Garner Range, Jr., James J. Range, and Eugenia Range (Diller).

In 1915, after graduating from Science Hill, Harry Range, Sr., joined the H. R. Parrot Company as a Ford automobile salesman. He remained in that position until he took charge of a Ford agency in Jonesborough, Tennessee. Range left the Ford agency in 1922 to assume a position as head of a Dodge dealership in Johnson City. In 1928, he became a distributor of Dodge and Victory Six cars for Kentucky and southern Indiana. This caused Range to move to Louisville, Kentucky, where he lived until 1931 when he returned to Johnson City. He then became owner and president of Range Motors, Inc., a Buick automobile and General Motors truck dealership. The dealership was located on South Road Street, near the intersection of Jobe Street.

After Range retired in 1957, he devoted most of his time to community affairs. For many years he served on the board of directors of Memorial Hospital in Johnson City. Range also chaired the board for a time. Other community organizations in which Range was active included the Salvation Army, the Girls' Club, the Girl Scout Council, and the Kiwanis Club. He was a member of Munsey Memorial Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee and chair of the administrative board. When a nursing home was added to Memorial Hospital in 1960, it was named in honor of Range in appreciation for his service to the building expansion program. Range died in Johnson City on March 10, 1981. His children, especially Harry G. Range, Jr., were also important business and civic leaders in Johnson City.
