John H. Crawford was born ca. 1814 and resided in Washington County, Tennessee prior to the Civil War. He served as Circuit Court Clerk from 1852 to 1861. In 1862 John Crawford was commissioned as a colonel and received the authority to raise a regiment of infantry for the Confederacy. The Sixtieth Tennessee Infantry Regiment was organized on October 1, 1862 and mustered into service November 7, 1862. Colonel Crawford, with his regiment, was sent to Vicksburg, Mississippi, where he remained until the surrender of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. After his pardon, Colonel Crawford served in General John C. Vaughn's Brigade in East Tennessee and western Virginia until his retirement in 1864. After the war Colonel Crawford worked in the office of the Clerk and Master of the Chancery Court.
