SERIES DESCRIPTION

Subgroup A, FINANCIAL RECORDS, 1898-1945, Boxes 1-58.

This subgroup consists of correspondence, ledgers, tax statements, budgets, annual and quarterly reports, earning and account statements, contracts, and work papers. Subjects include state and federal regulations and taxes; company refinancing and merger; legal negotiations and contracts; employee relations; and property additions. The financial records are divided into six series as follows: Series I, Government Tax and Agency Files, 1914-1945; Series II, Subject Files, 1898-1945; Series III, Marketing Files, 1920-1945; Series IV, Supporting Files, 1915-1945; Series V, Overhead Cost Studies, 1941-42; and Series VI, Miscellaneous Bound Volumes, 1918-1945.

Series A-I, GOVERNMENT TAX AND AGENCY FILES, 1914-1945, Boxes 1-14.

Series A-I contains annual reports; correspondence; registration statements; commission orders; tax assessments, estimates and returns; and pamphlets. These records were generated as a result of regulation and taxation by the federal government and the states of Massachusetts, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Reports to the Federal Power Commission, and to the Securities and Exchange Commission are included. Miscellaneous information concerning these agencies can also be found in Series II, Subject Files. The records are arranged alphabetically by state/agency first, and then chronologically.

Series A-II, SUBJECT FILES, 1898-1945, Boxes 15-33.

Series A-II includes account statements, audits, correspondence, budgets, contracts and legal documents concerning such topics as the ETLPC/TEECmerger, refinancing, bonds and securities, Tennessee Realty Company and purchasing agreements. Copies of company charters are included in the exhibits submitted in the ETLPC suit again the Tennessee Valley Authority and are filed under TVA litigation. The files are arranged alphabetically by subject and then chronologically. Tennessee Valley Authority, which obtained custody of the records when it purchased ETLPC in 1945, used a numeric classification system to categorize documents. Where used, this system has been retained. (For example, 680 "Land and buildings" is a TVA category).

Series A-III, MARKETING FILES, 1920-1945, Boxes 34-37.

Series A-III contains correspondence, bulletins, contracts, transcripts, orders, studies, surveys, and newspaper clippings collected or generated by the company in relation with its public relations and advertising activities. Subjects include electric power utilization and distribution, natural gas, proposed hydro- electric development, company property and rights-of-way, and employee relations and activities. The folders are arranged numerically by the company's assigned file numbers.

Series A-IV, SUPPORTING FILES, 1915-1945, Boxes 38-45.

Series A-IV includes memoranda, company procedures, preliminary cost analyses and budgets, expenditure reports, working papers, and supporting details for journals and reports. These files provide additional information used by the accounting department in preparation of the budgets and tax reports in previous series. The arrangement is alphabetical first and then chronological.

Series A-V, OVERHEAD COST STUDIES, 1941-1942, Boxes 46A-47.

Series A-V consists of overhead cost studies done for Tennessee Eastern Electric Company and East Tennessee Light and Power Company at the time of the two companies' merger. Although the studies were completed in 1941 and 1942, they contain information dating back to 1912. The studies include analysis of work orders, additions to plants and construction costs, and reconciliations of book entries to the original costs for the entire company, as well as individual substations and electric plants. The books are arranged according to the alpha-numeric code assigned by the company. Oversized volumes have been placed in oversized boxes which have been stored with the collection.

Series A-VI, MISCELLANEOUS BOUND VOLUMES, 1918-1945, Boxes 48-58.

Series A-VI contains budget analysis, earning statements, ledgers, and vouchers concerning the accounts and expenditures, financing, and property of East Tennessee Light and Power Company and its predecessor companies. The volumes are arranged first alphabetically by company name, second by title, and third chronologically by date of volume. The set of budget analyses, however, was kept together and placed at the beginning of the series. These are arranged first, alphabetically by company name and second, chronologically by date of the volume.

Subgroup B, OPERATING RECORDS, 1908-1945, Boxes 59-102.

Subgroup B contains job orders, voucher and job order analyses, inventories, blueprints, operating logs, and reports concerning construction and repair of the generation and distribution system; daily system operations; and area electric demands. Subgroup B is divided into four series: Series I, Bound Volumes, 1908-1945; Series II, Job Order Files, 1921-1945; Series III, Subject Files, 1910-1945; and Series IV, Photographic Prints and Negatives, 1926, 1928, 1935, 1940 and undated.

Series B-I, BOUND VOLUMES, 1908-1945, Boxes 59-61.

Series B-I consists of operating ledgers; generation and distribution reports; inventories; and voucher and job order analyses regarding generation and transmission of electricity, system repairs, construction, and equipment. Series I is divided into two-subseries: Subseries B-I-A, Miscellaneous Volumes; and Subseries B-I-B, Inventories and Job Order Analysis.

Subseries B-I-A, MISCELLANEOUS VOLUMES, 1943-1945, Boxes 59-61.

Subseries B-I-A includes reports and ledgers concerning electric generation at the Nolichucky and Wilbur Hydro plants, distribution equipment and system customer demands. The volumes are arranged alphabetically by title.

Subseries B-I-B, INVENTORIES AND JOB ORDER ANALYSIS, 1908-1945, Boxes 62-82.

Subseries B-I-B contains inventories, job order and voucher analysis. Subjects include substation and distribution equipment and system repairs. The volumes are arranged alphabetically by company name and then numerically.

Series B-II, JOB ORDER FILES, 1921-1945, Boxes 83-92.

Series B-II consists of blueprints, construction requisitions, office memos, cost estimates, and receipts concerning construction and repairs to the generating and transmitting system. The files are divided into two chronological periods, before and after the merger in 1941. In addition, the pre-1941 files are divided by company. The pre-merger files of both companies are arranged by the sequential numeric code assigned to each job. The sequence begins over at the approximate time when the two companies were first affiliate: in 1937 for Tennessee Eastern Electric Company, and in 1938 for East Tennessee Light and Power Company. After 1936 the job order files were divided according to the cost of project. Job order files for projects costing over $250 are arranged numerically. The files of projects less than $250 are placed at the end of the series and arranged by the alpha-numeric code assigned according to the location (city initial) and type of work done. Oversized blueprints have been removed and stored in the map cabinet according to accession number.

Series B-III, SUBJECT FILES, 1910-1945, Boxes 93-102.

Series B-III contains correspondence, blueprints, photo albums, construction estimates, daily operating logs, requisitions, inventories and questionnaires. Subjects include dam construction; electric demand; operation of steam and hydro plants; and electric transmission. The files are arranged alphabetically by subject. Oversized blueprints have been removed and stored in the map cabinet according to accession number.

Series B-IV, PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS AND NEGATIVES, 1926, 1928, 1935, 1940 and undated, Boxes 119-120.

This series includes black and white photographic prints and negatives of dams, substations and rivers (primarily the Nolichucky River). Some of the loose photographs originally were filed in the Appalachian Photographic Archives, while others were removed from Box 99, Folder 1, and Box 101B, folders 24 and 25. Prints depict Wilbur Dam, Cranberry, North Carolina substation; Johnson City substation; and other unidentified substations. Prints with APA numbers have accompanying negatives. These prints and negatives are arranged sequentially according to APA numbers. Other prints removed from Box 101B have been assigned numbers, described, and listed sequentially according to original numbers. Prints of the Watauga Hydro Plant, removed from Box 101B have been filed together. Loose negatives removed from Box 46, folder 8, have been placed in Box 120. Most of these negatives are unidentified, but a small group on the Nolichucky Hydro Plant and Substation have been placed in a separate envelope in Box 120.

The Statements of Assessed Value for utility companies in Virginia, 1919-1940, has been removed and placed in the vertical file under the heading, Virginia State Corporation Commission.

ADDITION 1945

This addition includes the following:

Subgroup C, Tennessee Valley Authority Records of Purchase of East Tennessee Light and Power Company, 1945, Boxes 118A-118B.

This subgroup contains documentations on the purchase by TVA of ETLPC in June of 1945. Included in the subgroup are cost analysis documents on the steam plants, dams, substation and transmissions lines of ETLPC, together with maps of ETLPC's distribution system. The subgroup also contains reports on land owned by ETLPC and deeds and purchase agreements made between TVA and ETLPC. The subgroup is divided into two series: Series I, Cost Analysis documents, 1945; and Series II, Deeds and Sales Agreement, 1945.

Series C-I, Cost Analysis Documents, 1945

This series includes documents which provide a cost analysis of ETLPC's steam plants, dams, substations, and transmission lines. Maps and blueprints are included in this series. Documents are arranged alphabetically by name or locale of the substation. One file which contains various types of cost analysis documents has been placed at the end of the series. Please note that the alpha-numeric which follows the name of a substation or transmission line is ETLPC's symbol for that substation or transmission line.

Series C-II, Deeds and Purchase Agreements, 1945

Included in this series are the deeds and purchase agreement entered into between TVA and ETLPC when the TVA purchased the power company. Arrangement is alphabetical by type of document.
