BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

D. R. Beeson, Sr. was born May 3, 1881 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. In 1900 Beeson attended Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania where he specialized in mathematics. He left college after two years when his funds ran low. Beeson began work as a draftsman for United States Steel in Gary, West Virginia. With his background in mathematics and drafting and his natural ability to draw, Beeson decided on architecture and completed a correspondence course in the subject.

In 1905, Beeson moved to Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia in order to work with George L. Carter, who was consolidating railroads and coal companies in south central Appalachia to form the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio Railway. He remained in Bristol until 1912 when he moved to Johnson City, Tennessee to open his architectural practice.

During his architectural career, Beeson designed many prominent buildings in Johnson City and the surrounding area. Montrose Court, Mayne Williams Library, Appalachian Hospital, Almeda Apartments, Henry Johnson School, Columbus Powell School, the old gymnasium and the original science buildings at East Tennessee State University and multiple private residences are among the buildings in Johnson City designed by Beeson. He also created plans for the Franklin Club in Elizabethton, Tennessee, the hospital in Banner Elk, North Carolina, and the original buildings at Lees-McRae College.

In 1949 Dick Beeson, Jr. joined his father's firm; the name changed to Beeson and Beeson in 1952. The father and son partnership was responsible for Fairmont School, Burgin Dossett Hall and several dormitories at ETSU and some buildings at Milligan College - all in or around Johnson City. In 1971, D. R. Beeson retired from practice at the age of 90.

While living in Johnson City, Beeson became an avid hiker and outdoorsman; between 1913 and 1920 he took numerous outings into the unexplored hill country with C. Hodge Mathes, a professor at East Tennessee

State Normal School. In the 1920s, Beeson and Mathes founded a Sunday hiking club with Paul Fink and a forest ranger.

Beeson's interest in the wilderness probably led in 1921 to his 19 year term as a troop leader with the Boy Scouts of America. Other community services included: teaching vocational school classes at night, serving as president of the Rotary Club, serving two terms on Johnson City Board of Education and Board of Zoning Appeals and working as moderator for the Holston Presbyterian Church.

Beeson met Elma Lillian Rankin in 1913. She taught music at the East Tennessee State Normal School. They were married in 1915 and later raised four children, D. R. Beeson, Jr., Mary Beeson Ellison, Anne Beeson Gouge, and Betty Beeson Helms. D. R. Beeson, Sr. died January 17, 1983 in Johnson City.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The D. R. Beeson, Sr. Papers contain architectural drawings, blueprints, and contract books relating to Beeson's designs of private residences, courthouses, school buildings, churches, bank buildings, and offices in East Tennessee, western North Carolina, southwest Virginia, and West Virginia. Also in the papers are Beeson's autobiography, essays and short stories; collected games and puzzles; newspaper clippings, pins, certificates, plaques, and photographs from his life-long interest in the Boy Scouts and from his activities in civic clubs and vocational schools; books relating to Appalachia; diaries of his hiking trips through the Appalachian Mountains; and miscellaneous correspondence (incoming and outgoing) dating from 1940-1976. In addition, three unidentified account books spanning from 1830 to 1923 were retained with the Beeson papers.

The papers date from 1830 to 1980. The bulk of the material is from 1913 to 1970. The papers are divided into three series: Series I, Professional Papers, 1903-1964; Series II, Personal Papers, 1830-1980; and Series III, Photographs and Slides, c. 1913-1975 and undated.
