Summary: Collection contains court dockets, minutes, registers, election results, and civil and criminal cases. Exhibits used in cases include account books, daybooks and store inventories.

Notes: Restricted: fragile documents may not be photocopied.

Biography/History: The Washington County court system dates back to the Colonial era, when as Washington District, the area was under the jurisdiction of North Carolina. After achieving statehood in 1796, Tennessee set up its own court system, which included a Superior Court of Law & Equity, and Pleas and Chapter Session Courts. In 1809, the Superior Court was abolished by the state legislature. Circuit Courts of Law & Equity heard equity cases. The state was divided into chancery divisions in 1827.

Provenance: Bulk of collection transferred to Sherrod Library on permanent loan in 1958 by County Court Judge Elliot. These records transferred to the achives in 1979. In 1988 4 linear feet of records transferred to the archives from the Tenn. State Library & Archives, Nashville, which microfilmed the records in 1987-88. These records have been at Duke University, Durham, NC, since 1942.

Access Restrictions: Use of materials restricted to library
