BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Shoun family members live in Johnson County and Carter County, Tennessee. The ancestor to the Johnson County Shouns is Leonard Shoun, who was born in Loudon County, Virginia on November 10, 1773. He married Virginia Barbara Slemp (b. May 3, 1775; d. April 20, 1851) in Washington County, Virginia on August 14, 1792. She was the daughter of Frederick Slemp and Mary Metz Slemp. Leonard and Barbara came to what is now Johnson County, Tennessee in 1792, when he was nineteen years old, and she seventeen years of age. Leonard accumulated a substantial amount of wealth. He had a large homestead at Shoun's Cross Roads, located on Town Creek, a tributary of Roane Creek. (Shouns Cross Roads is now Shouns, two miles south of Mountain City, on U.S. 421.) Leonard also owned several slaves, a country store and an iron forge at Shouns Cross Roads, as well as a large tract of land on Doe Creek.
Leonard and Barbara had 18 children, all except one of whom were married and living when he died at his home on Shouns Cross Roads on June 9, 1845. Barbara also died at Shouns Cross Roads six years later, on April 20, 1851. Both are buried at Shouns.
Jesse L. Shouns (b.July 26, 1850; d. October 11, 1918), the great grandson of Leonard, lived on Stoney Creek, Carter County, Tennessee. He married Mary Ann Elizabeth "Polly" Shoun (b. March 23, 1852; d. ?) on October 13, 1870. They had six children, among them Thadeus Napoleon "Poley" Shoun (b. October 10, 1874; d.?) and Jacob L. Shoun (b. September 21, 1877; d. ?). Jacob married Belle Hardin, date unknown.
Thadeus Napoleon married Martha Hardin (b. July 29, 1874; d. May 4, 1926) on August 1, 1897. They lived on Stoney Creek and had two daughters, Bessie and Cora Ada. Bessie married twice. Her first husband was Clyde Estep. They had three children: Nina May, Nelda, and Zola. Bessie then married Robert Stout. They had one son, Robert Stout, Jr. Bessie lived in Elizabethton, Tennessee.
Cora Ada, born on May 1, 1898, married Henry Daily Myers on December 22, 1917. They moved to Johnson City, Tennessee where they lived on Division Street. Cora and Henry had four children: Henry Elwood (b. February 1, 1922); Walter Junior (b. April 28, 1923); T. N. Harmon (b. November 23, 1925); and Anna Pearl (b. March 19, 1928). Walter Junior married Hazel Belle Dykes (b. September 29, 1922) on November 22, 1943. They reside in Johnson City. They have two daughters, Norma Jane (b. February 21, 1955), who lives in Johnson City and Martha Gail (b. May 25, 1949) who lives in Tallahassee, Florida.
