HISTORICAL NOTE

Thomas G. Burton and Ambrose N. Manning, Department of English, East Tennessee State University, in 1964 began taping folk songs, ballads, tales, and other types of folklore from East Tennessee and western North Carolina.  In 1969 they received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and taught high school students of Avery and Watauga Counties, North Carolina how to conduct oral research interviews and to operate portable tape recorders.  The students' efforts centered on residents of the Beech Mountain area of North Carolina and resulted in the production of taped interviews, musical performances and storytelling sessions.

The tapes from these interviews, together with other audio and videotapes on folklore, music, and manners and customs in southern Appalachia constitute the archives' earliest, and most important, folk life collection.  These tapes formed the core of East Tennessee State University's Oral History Archives, founded by Burton and Manning in 1968.  A decade after the establishment of the Oral History Archives, but prior to the opening of the Archives of Appalachia, the tapes were placed in the Appalachian Room of the Sherrod Library.  Then, upon the establishment of the archives, Burton and Manning donated the tapes and related materials to that organization.

From 1966 to 1971, Professors Burton and Manning co-authored a column in the Johnson City Press-Chronicle which was entitled "Singing Out."  This weekly column dealt mainly with songs and ballads.  While some readers contributed variations of ballads, others contributed their personal collections of folklore.

Burton and Manning edited several books containing folk songs and folklore collected by their students.  Both have served as president of the Tennessee Folklore Association and have been active in other folklore organizations.  From 1966 to 1972, they directed the East Tennessee State University Folk Festival.

Manning retired from the English department in 1983.  Burton continues to teach a variety of courses, among them folklore and Shakespearean literature.  Burton has researched the practice of serpent-handling in southern Appalachia.  This research resulted in the publication in 1993 of the book Serpent-Handling Believers (University of Tennessee Press).  Burton also is active in directing the Appalachian-Scottish Studies program sponsored by ETSU's Center for Appalachian Studies and Services.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection resulted from Dr. Burton’s and Mr. Manning’s interests in Appalachian folklore and related teaching, research, and service activities.  A central component of the collection consists of reel-to-reel audio recordings, dub sheets, transcripts, and indices created as part of the professor’s efforts to gather ballads, instrumental music, stories, superstitions and beliefs, folk remedies, and accounts of everyday life from individuals in Western North Carolina and East Tennessee.  Interviews were conducted by the two professors and their students as part of class assignments.

The collection also includes correspondence concerning ballads, folk festivals, and taping of songs; lists and photographs of informants; newspaper clippings from the "Singing Out" column; plans for the folk festivals; and musical notations of traditional ballads, manuscripts, and publicity for the books which Professors Burton and Manning co-authored.

Organization: The collection is divided into ten series as follows:  Series I, Correspondence, 1965-74, Boxes 1-4; Series II, Dub Sheets and Transcripts, 1964-79, Boxes 4-11; Series III, Indices, 1932, 1965-71 and no date, Boxes 12-14; Series IV, Project Publications and Project Publicity, 1966-71, Box 14; Series V, Research Materials, ca. 1969, Box 14; Series VI, Community Contributions, ca. 1966-74, Boxes 14-19;  Series VII, Folk Festivals, 1966-74, Boxes 19-20; and Series VII, Tapes: Audiotapes 1-157 and Videotapes BMV 3-6; 9-10, 1964-70; Series IX, Photographic Materials, 1925, 1932, 1956, 1968-1974 and No Date, Boxes 22-24; and Series X, General Subject Files, 1899-1989, Boxes 25-27.  (Oversized items have been removed and placed in an oversized box and two oversized folders.)

Series II, DUB SHEETS AND TRANSCRIPTS, 1964-79, Boxes 4-11.

Series II includes the dub sheets and transcripts for the audio recordings in the collection.  The dub sheets provide a listing of the contents of the tapes, while the transcripts provide a written version of the spoken interviews.  Much of the material was collected by students and not all of it is transcribed.  Many transcriptions were done by Manning's students as a class requirement.  As a result, the quality and accuracy of these transcriptions vary considerably.  The series is divided into two subseries according to type of document as follows:  Subseries II-A, Dub Sheets, 1964-74, Box 4; and Subseries II-B, Transcripts, 1964-79, Boxes 5-11.  See also addition Series II-B for related materials.

            Subseries II-A, DUB SHEETS, 1964-74, Box 4.

Subseries II-A contains the dub sheets for the tapes. The dub sheets list the contents of the tape, when and where it was recorded, and by whom.  They are filed ten reels per folder and the number of sheets per reel is noted.  Items for which there are typed transcriptions are marked with an asterisk.  Items for which there are typed index cards are checked in pencil.  An ink check denotes use in a publication.  Arrangement follows the sequential numbering of the tapes.

            Subseries II-B, TRANSCRIPTS, 1964-79, Boxes 5-11.

Subseries II-B contains typed transcriptions for many of the audio recordings.  Most of the transcripts were prepared by a typist in the archives from hand-written copy prepared previously by Manning’s students or by Burton-Manning project assistants.  The quality of these transcriptions varies substantially.  Material on the first 5 reels was used in  Collection of Folklore: Folksongs (1967) edited by Burton and Manning.  A copy of this book has been placed in folder #5.  A substantial portion of the material on Reels #6-9 is in Folksongs II (1969) edited by Burton and Manning. A copy of this book has been placed in folder #6. Arrangement of the transcriptions follows the sequential numbering of the tapes, with the exception of the transcript for "A Film about Ray Hicks," (1974).  This transcript has been placed at the end of Box 5 in folder #22.  See also addition Series II-B for related materials.

Series III, INDICES, 1965-71 and no date, Boxes 12-14.

Series III contains the indices which Burton and Manning developed to control their collection.  The card indices are grouped in the following categories maintaining the division and arrangement used by Burton and Manning:  Song Indices (1932, 1965-71), Speaker/Performer index, General Folklore or Subject Index (undated), Child and Laws Ballads (1931, 1966-71), "Singing Out" Column Addresses and Informants (1967-71), Motif index, and Critical Exposition of Ballads index.. One folder of information containing examples of how cards are catalogued is placed at the end of this series. The song indices include four boxes of index cards with information about individual tunes.  Included among the items of information are the author of the title (where known), collection of the tune, person who recorded the tune, place the song was recorded, and reel location in the collection.  Information is not necessarily complete for each title.  Arrangement is alphabetical by title of song.  The general folklore index lists broad folklore topics, specific topics, persons used as sources, and reel location.  Arrangement of cards is alphabetical by broad subject. The Child and Laws Ballads indices contain titles to ballads collected by Francis James Child (The English and Scottish Popular Ballads), and by George Malcolm Laws, Jr. (American Balladry from British Broadsides and Native American Balladry).   Arrangement is by Child and Laws designations.  Child ballads have been placed first, and Laws ballads second.  The motif and critical exposition indices follow standard classification schemes developed for folklore. The index to the "Singing Out" column is divided into subsections as follows: Newspaper Articles, Ballad Correspondents, Other Addresses, and Persons on Tape.  Arrangement within each section is alphabetical by title of article or by surname of correspondent.

Series IV, PROJECT PUBLICATIONS AND PROJECT PUBLICITY, 1966-71, Box 14.

Series IV includes project related publications and materials which publicized the oral history project work.  Included are notes, proof sheets or paste-up sheets, music notations, and publicity announcements relating to three books published from the project: Folk Songs I, Folk Songs II, and Some Ballad Folks. The musical notation for ballads was transcribed by Annette L. Wolford Burton from informants tape recorded performances of the ballads. Some files resulting from initial work on an additional unpublished book on non-Child ballads is part of this series.  There are news clippings and correspondence relating to the “Singing Out” column published in local newspapers featuring ballads. The series is arranged alphabetically by title or subject.
