Provenance: The Kenneth C. Spaulding Photographs were donated to the Archives of Appalachia by Mildred Kozsuch, Spaulding's daughter, in 1986.

Access: The photographs are open for research.

Processing Information: Marie Tedesco completed processing and the collection was opened for research in 1992.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Kenneth C. Spaulding was born in 1903 in Albion County, Nebraska. He attended Albion County public schools. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, Tennessee. His dissertation, "Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School, Its History, Interpretation, and Evaluation," was completed in 1944 for the Department of Rural Economics, Graduate School of Education, George Peabody College.

Spaulding taught at a number of colleges in the south central Appalachian region. He taught social sciences at Western Kentucky State College, Bowling Green, Kentucky; business at Bowling Green Business College, Bowling Green, Kentucky; business at West Liberty State College, Liberty, West Virginia; and business economics and banking at East Tennessee State College. He retired from East Tennessee State in 1971.

Spaulding also was an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). During his residence in Johnson City, he was a member of the First Christian Church. In addition to his religious activities, Spaulding was a member of the Board of Trustees for Milligan College and was active in the Rotary Club of Johnson City.

Spaulding died in Johnson City in 1971. He was survived by his wife Minnie Kate, and three children: Edith Katherine, Carl Matthew and Mildred Jeannette.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Kenneth C. Spaulding Photographs depict rural scenes and homes in Rabun Gap, Georgia; Ocoee, Tennessee; and Newfound Gap, Tennessee and North Carolina.

Organization: The collection is organized into two series: Series I, Prints, 1939 and undated; and Series II, Negatives, 1939 and undated. Both prints and negatives are stored by accession number in the photograph storage area.

Series I, PRINTS, Nos. 1-26, 1939 and undated. [Undated photos taken during the 1930s.]

This series contains 26 black and white photographic prints (most 4 1/2" x 3") of rural scenes and landscapes in Rabun Gap, Georgia; Ocoee, Tennessee; and Newfound Gap, Tennessee and North Carolina. The prints have been assigned KCS numbers 1 through 26. Those prints which also are identified by an APA (Appalachian Photographic Archives) number are accompanied by a negative (See Series II).

Series II, NEGATIVES, APA 1448-1466, 1939 and undated. [Undated photos taken during he 1930s.]

This series contains 19 black and white negatives (4 1/2" x 3") of rural scenes and landscapes in Rabun Gap, Georgia; Rabun County, Georgia; Ocoee, Tennessee; and Newfound Gap, Tennessee and North Carolina. These negatives accompany the prints in Series I which are identified by a matching APA number (See Series I).
