Provenance: The Washington County (Tennessee) American Bicentennial Committee Records were donated to the Archives of Appalachia on June 20, 1986 by Frank Tannewitz, Jr., who served as chairman of the committee.

Access: The records are open for research.

HISTORICAL NOTE

The Washington County American Revolution Bicentennial Committee was established in June 1974 by officials of Washington County, Tennessee, the City of Johnson City, Tennessee and the town of Jonesborough, Tennessee. Assistance was provided by the Upper East Tennessee Section of the Tennessee State Planning Office and the First Tennessee-Virginia Development District.

The committee was established for the purpose of preparing and implementing a plan for the celebration of the American Revolution bicentennial in Washington County, Tennessee. In addition, the committee was to coordinate plans and activities with the Upper East Tennessee Bicentennial Committee, the Tennessee American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, and the American Revolution Bicentennial administration on regional, state and national levels. The committee's projects included the marking of the route of the Old Stage Road in Washington County.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Washington County (Tennessee) American Bicentennial Committee Records consist of agendas and minutes of committee meetings; proposed bylaws, bylaws, and the committee structure of the Bicentennial Committee; a list of members, ex officio members, and advisors of the committee; incoming and outgoing correspondence of Frank A. Tannewitz, Jr., committee chairman; a preliminary draft of the Upper East Tennessee Bicentennial Plan; a calendar of bicentennial events in Tennessee during the year 1976; photocopies of newsclippings; miscellaneous memoranda; and brochures, pamphlets, magazines, newsletters, and miscellaneous printed material.

The records contain information concerning the approved projects of the Washington County Bicentennial Committee; a concert sponsored by the Tennessee State Bicentennial Commission and the Upper East Tennessee Bicentennial Commission; Bicentennial events in Johnson City, Jonesborough, Unicoi County, and Carter County, Tennessee; and "sites, places and districts of major historic significance" in upper East Tennessee.

Although some of the records are undated, the dated records are from the period 1973-1976.
