ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION
Provenance: The Dale K. Larkin Collection was donated by Dale K. Larkin to the Archives of Appalachia on October 17, 1986. The collection includes the papers that were acquired by Larkin as the result of his association with United Inter-Mountain Telephone (UIMT) Company and Communications Workers of America (CWA), Local 10871.
Access: The collection is open for public research.
Processing Information: The processing of the collection was completed by Michelle Saas in December 1993.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Dale K. Larkin was born on February 16, 1955 in Kingsport, Tennessee. He attended the public schools of Liberty Hill Elementary and Church Hill High School in Church Hill, Tennessee. In 1972 Larkin began working for United Inter-Mountain Telephone (UIMT) and joined the Communications Workers of America (CWA), Local 10871. Through his affiliation in CWA Local 10871, Larkin served as president of the Sullivan-Hawkins/and Hancock Counties Central Labor Council from 1982-84. Larkin served on the staff of The Communicator, CWA Local 10871's newsletter, from 1982-83. He received his bachelor of science degree in communications and political science in 1987 from East Tennessee State University. Larkin still works at United Inter-Mountain Telephone and participates in the activities of CWA Local 10871.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Dale K. Larkin Collection contains correspondence of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) Union from the local level to the national level; organizational, legal, and financial documents from the CWA and American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO); and training programs and special projects sponsored by CWA and unions affiliated with the AFL-CIO. The collection also includes a variety of documents from United Inter-Mountain Telephone Company, a number of international and regional union publications, and newsclippings and memorabilia on the CWA. The papers date from 1959-1985, but the bulk of the collection dates from 1975-85.
Organization: Since there was no discernible arrangement to the collection, the collection was divided into six series as follows: Series I, Organizational, Legal, and Financial Documents; Series II, Training Programs and Special Projects; Series III, Incoming Correspondence; Series IV, United Inter-Mountain Telephone; Series V, Publications; and Series VI, Memorabilia. One poster, "American is Beautiful: Buy American... and Look for the Union Label," has been removed from Series VI and placed in oversized storage.

SERIES DESCRIPTION
Series I, ORGANIZATIONAL, LEGAL, AND FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS, 1980-1985, Box 1.
This series includes organizational, legal, and financial documents created by a division within the AFL-CIO or by CWA. Included are constitutions, by-laws, grievance status reports, expense vouchers, and savings and retirement trust documents. The arrangement follows a hierarchical pattern, with AFL-CIO documents placed first, CWA international documents second, and CWA local documents third. Documents are then arranged alphabetically by type of document, and chronologically by date of document.
Series II, TRAINING PROGRAMS AND SPECIAL PROJECTS, 1975-1985, Box 1.
This series includes manuals from training programs; conference advertisements for special training and for conferences on union issues; and outlines of special projects. Special interest programs include: "Job Training Partnership Act: Dislocated Workers Program"; "Rewiring Your World with Martin Agronsky"; and "Workplace Presence" outlined by United Way of America. The arrangement is alphabetical by the title of the document, with the folder of conference advertisements placed at the end of the series.
Series III, INCOMING CORRESPONDENCE, 1979-1985, Boxes 1-2.
This series includes correspondence directed for the most part to Dale K. Larkin from CWA and AFL-CIO officials; political leaders; and business officials. The bulk of the correspondence comes from AFL-CIO, unions, departments within the AFL-CIO, and CWA local and international officials. The arrangement is chronological by the date of the letter.
Series IV, UNITED INTER-MOUNTAIN TELEPHONE, 1976-1983, Boxes 2-3.
This series includes benefits and programs available to employees of United Inter-Mountain Telephone (UIMT) concerning health, dental, retirement, stock ownership, and educational advancement assistance. Also included are contracts between UIMT and CWA, an employee profile of Dale K. Larkin, and overtime equalization lists from the Kingsport district of UIMT. The arrangement is alphabetical by the title of the document.
Series V, PUBLICATIONS, 1959-1985, Boxes 3-5.
This series includes such publications as CWA local, regional, and national newsletters; AFL-CIO newsletters; and miscellaneous pamphlets and booklets. The arrangement is alphabetical by the title of the publication, with the folder of miscellaneous publications placed at the end of the series.

This series includes CWA paraphernalia, newspaper clippings, posters, certificates, and a calendar. The arrangement is chronological by date of the document.
