Provenance: The Clifford A. Maxwell Photographs were donated to the archives on March 26, 1987 by Maxwell's widow, Ruth B. Maxwell, and his son, James C. Maxwell.
Access: The photographs are open for research.
Processing Information: T.Fisher and Marie Tedesco completed processing and the collection was opened for research in June 1988.
Clifford A. Maxwell was born in Bristol, Tennessee on June 24, 1906, the son of Arthur Clifford and Bessie Ball Maxwell. As a youngster, he moved with his family to Johnson City, where he attended public school and East Tennessee State Teachers College. In the 1920s Maxwell journeyed to New York, where he found work writing humor for a number of magazines. During the 1930s he returned to Johnson City to begin a photographic career which, except for time spent in the United States Navy during World War II, lasted until 1986.
Maxwell married Ruth Barker in 1950. They had one son, James, who as of this writing resides in Johnson City. Maxwell was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Johnson City, as well as in a number of community organizations, among them the Johnson City/Washington County area Chamber of Commerce, the Watauga Valley Art League, and the Tipton-Haynes Historical Association. He also was a member of both the Tennessee Professional Photographers Association and the Professional Photographers of America.
The negatives and prints in the collection date from the 1950s and continue through the early 1970s, with the bulk of the materials coming from the earlier period. Included in the collection are negatives and prints of businesses, events, street scenes, rural scenes, and persons in Johnson City and the surrounding area. Also included are negatives of World War II era ships.
Important subjects covered in the collection include: Tipton-Haynes Historical Farm, Johnson City businesses, Johnson City street scenes, Andrew Johnson residence and tailor shop, Jonesborough street scenes, Washington County historical residences, Washington County churches, Maxwell family ancestors, rural landscapes and structures, and World War Ii era destroyers and submarines.

Series I, NEGATIVES, c. 1940-86, Boxes 1-7.
This series contains negatives selected from Maxwell's collection. Although most of the negatives in the collection are 4" x 5" black and white, there are some 120 mm and 35 mm negatives as well. These negatives cover a wide variety of topics, among these are Johnson City and Washington County historical structures, scenes, and events; rural scenes; Maxwell family members; Tipton-Haynes Historic Site; and World War II ships. The series is divided into subseries according to the different negative identification and ordering systems used by Maxwell. Of these subseries, three are categorized according to the number and/or alpha-numbering system used by Maxwell. Two subseries are specifically topical (ships and Tipton-Haynes), while one is topical in a generic sense (the historical negatives). Subseries F is characterized by the negatives being unnumbered. Not every negative in Maxwell's possession was chosen for inclusion in the archives. Hence, gaps may exist within negative's numbering systems. Subseries I-A is the Alpha-Numeric group; Subseries I-C, single numbered negatives; Subseries I-D, Historical; Subseries I-E, Tipton-Haynes; Subseries I-F, unnumbered; and subseries I-G, Ships.
Subseries I-A, ALPHA-NUMERIC NEGATIVES, A1-Z208, undated. Box 1.
Included are copy negatives made from the Burr Harrison historical photograph collection, together with other copy and original negatives of Johnson City buildings, street scenes and persons. Although the negatives were made by Maxwell in the years from 1950-86, the image itself in some cases is an older one. This is true, for example, in regard to the Burr Harrison copy negatives. Many of these images date to the early twentieth century. The negatives are arranged by alpha-numeric designation (e.g. A-1, A-2, A-3, etc.). Maxwell's handwritten order book is included in this subseries. The order book usually provides a specific description of the negatives.
Subseries I-B, DOUBLE NUMBERING SYSTEM 101(212)-223(655) undated. Box 1.
Included are negatives numbered according to a double number system (e.g. 151[515]; 151[516] etc.). Numbering is consecutive, but not inclusive, because not all of these negatives were selected for placement in the collection. Topics covered vary, including persons, buildings, events, and street scenes from Johnson City and the surrounding area.
Subseries I-C, SINGLE NUMBER NEGATIVES, 5-8674, c. 1952-86. Boxes 2-5.These negatives are numbered according to a single number system (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.). The order book Maxwell used to record the negatives has been copied and included in this subseries. Numbering is consecutive, but not inclusive, because not all of these negatives were selected to be placed in the archives. It should be noted that since Maxwell recorded the name of his customer in the order book, that name will not always indicate what is depicted by the negatives. For example, Mr. Smith might be the customer, but the negative ordered could be of Main Street in Johnson City.
Subseries I-D, HISTORICAL NEGATIVES, undated. Box 5.Included in this subseries are negatives Maxwell categorized as historical. Many of these negatives are copies of older prints of late nineteenth and early twentieth century buildings and scenes and persons from the Johnson City-Washington County area. These negatives are separated into numbered and unnumbered categories. As far as can be determined, this subseries includes all of Maxwell's historic negatives.
Subseries I-E, TIPTON-HAYNES AND UNNUMBERED NEGATIVES, undated. Box 6.This subseries contains negatives of Tipton-Haynes Historic Site in Johnson City, Tennessee, and unnumbered negatives which cover a variety of subjects.
Subseries I-F, SHIPS, c. 1940-50 AND MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS, undated. Box 6.This subseries contains negatives of World War II era ships, including submarines, destroyers, carriers, and tugs. These negatives have been separated into numbered and unnumbered groups. Although it appears that the ship subseries contains all of Maxwell's negatives on this topic, the numbering is consecutive, but not inclusive. Also included in this subseries are miscellaneous order sheets and other materials.
Series II, PRINTS, undated, Boxes 8-10.
This series contains black and white prints of various sizes. The prints, categorized by subject, cover such topics as Tipton-Haynes, rural scenes, and various types of structures.
Series I, NEGATIVES, c. 1940-86. Boxes 1-7.

INDEX
*Please note that this index is not comprehensive because many negatives and prints could not be identified beyond their broad subject headings.
The following abbreviations were used: bx-Box; f-folders; hnn-historical series, no number; h-historical. Businesses and similar establishments which are named for an individual are alphabetized by the first word in the name (e.g. T. A. Faw Store is alphabetized under T; and James H. Dosser and Company under J; Mayne Williams Library under M. But homes, residences and farms are alphabetized by the individual's surname (e.g. John Miller Farm is placed under M; and Andrew Johnson Home under J).
The World War II ships are alphabetized by the name of the ship, without taking into account the USS designation. If the name of the ship is not known, it is alphabetized by its type and number (e.g. AKA 22, DD 779, LST 532 etc.).
References are to negatives, unless noted as prints.
Following are example of citations used:
Bx 4: F 6, 4650. - Negative will found in Box 4, Folder 6 number 4650; Box 6: F 2-20. - Negative will be found in Box 6, Folder 2, sheet 20. Box 1: F 4, 113 (281). - Negative will be found in Box 1, Folder 4, Negative number 113 (281).
Negative numbers follow systems used by Maxwell, except for the unnumbered series, where numbers were placed on the negative preserver sheets. In these series, the sheet numbers have been placed after the folder number (e.g. F 2 - 20).
Because Maxwell did not number the prints, numbers have been assigned to the prints. Within each folder, prints are numbered consecutively. References to prints are as follows: Prints, Bx 10:F 3, 1. The print will be found in Box 10, Folder 3, number 1.
