ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION

Provenance: The John A. Jones Collection was a part of the 7000 volume John A. Jones book collection purchased by ETSU's Sherrod Library in 1931 from Jones' son, Virgil Jones. The collection was transferred to the Archives of Appalachia in 1979.

Access: The collection is open for research.

Processing Information: The almanacs were processed in March 1985 and the scrapbooks in October 1996.


BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

John A. Jones was born in 1859 to Henry M. and Hannah Jones. John A. Jones was a member of the Society of Friends; he owned a 300 acre farm near Jonesborough, Tennessee. He married twice, to Margaret Ferguson (1854-1888) and to Sarah Ferguson (1857-1941). Jones had four children, Casper, Aubrey, Virgil, and Una Mae.

For a short period, John A. Jones operated a bookstore in Atlanta. It was his association with the bookstore that was the start of his large book collection. Jones also donated the property for the Fairview School near Jonesborough, Tennessee. Jones died in the spring of 1930.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of ninety-three almanacs and thirty-four scrapbooks. The almanacs were published from 1849 to 1929, by a variety of companies and organizations involved in farming, health, literature, medicine, religion, etc. The scrapbooks are items clipped from newspapers, magazines, and books glued in old books. The scrapbooks were given numbers and a completion date by Jones.

Organization: The collection is divided into two series: Series I, Almanacs, 1849-1929, boxes 1-7 and Series II, Scrapbooks, 1865-1881, boxes 8-15.

SERIES DESCRIPTION

Series I, ALMANACS, 1849-1929, Boxes 1-7.

Series I consists of ninety-three almanacs, published from 1849 to 1929, by a variety of companies and organizations involved in farming, health, literature, medicine, religion, etc. They are arranged alphabetically by title.

Series II, SCRAPBOOKS, 1865-1881, Boxes 8-15.

Series II consists of thirty-four scrapbooks which include material on the following subjects: life experiences, war stories, poems, religion, railroads, poverty, slaves, animals, birds, suicide, Christmas, nature, Indians, presidents and their wives, jokes, cartoons, etc. The scrapbooks were completed by John A. and Maggie E. Jones. The scrapbooks are arranged by the number assigned by Jones and/or by the completion date.
