William Henley Nelson (1837-1935), one of ten children of James and Eleanor (Parks) Nelson, was born in Washington County, Tennessee and raised in Abingdon, Virginia after his parents' death. Nelson's career as a military soldier, farmer, Tennessee county court judge, and state representative, illustrates both his diverse professional pursuits and his devotion to Tennessee's continued economic and political development.
After attending Tennessee public schools and the Academy in Abingdon, Virginia, William H. Nelson was hired to help build the First Baptist Church of Chattanooga, Tennessee (c. 1861-1862). When the Civil War broke out, W. H. Nelson and one of his brothers enlisted June 1862 as privates in the 10th Tennessee Infantry of the Union Army. W. H. Nelson finished his tour of service with the 10th Tennessee Infantry the following year and immediately re-enlisted as a private with Company H of the 5th Tennessee Cavalry in July of 1863. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant in August of 1863 and remained with this company until the end of the Civil War, when he was mustered out of the service as a captain.
W. H. Nelson returned to Chattanooga, Tennessee in August of 1865 after declining an appointment to West Point. However, in May of 1866, he accepted President Andrew Johnson's appointment as a 2nd lieutenant of the 7th Infantry, United States of America, and by October Nelson was stationed in Florida where he remained until 1869. The last ten years of Nelson's military career, 1869-1879, were spent in the trans-Mississippi West fighting Indians and serving as a guard during the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad. In early March of 1879 he was promoted to the rank of 1st lieutenant, but by March 20 of that year was forced to retire because of a hip injury.
After briefly residing in Chattanooga, Tennessee, W. H. Nelson moved to Ripshin Mountain, Tennessee to raise stock on his newly purchased 1000 acre farm. As a resident of Carter County, he served as Justice of the Peace of the 3rd Civil District, 1893 to 1906, and in 1900 was appointed the chairman of the county court. In 1896 Nelson ran an unsuccessful political race as the Republican candidate for the First Congressional District of Tennessee, but he was elected eventually to represent the First Senatorial District in the 53rd Tennessee General Assembly in 1902.
W. H. Nelson was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic for many years and served as the state commander from 1898 to 1899. In addition, he was a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States of America, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Johnson City Masonic Lodge, and the Baptist Church. At the time of his death, February 17, 1935, Captain Nelson was the oldest retired army officer in the United States.
The William Henley Nelson Family Papers contain correspondence, military certificates and commissions, political speeches and appointments, photo copies of Nelson's military service records, newsclippings and newspapers, essays, notes on the Nelson Family genealogy, photographs, and memorabilia documenting the military and political careers of W. H. Nelson between 1861 and 1935. The records dating after 1936 describe Nelson and St. John Family activities, their relationship to W. H. Nelson, and the literary activities of James Heaton and Pearl Nelson. See addition.
