BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

David Larry Nave was born on January 2, 1951 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He spent his childhood and adolescence in Mountain City, Tennessee and attended Johnson County Public Schools. In 1976 he graduated from East Tennessee State University with a B.S. degree in history. He minored in sociology with an emphasis in anthropology.

From April 1974 through April 1976, Nave worked as a field researcher, producer, camera man, and sound man for Broadside Television in Johnson City, Tennessee. He participated in the Southern Appalachian Video Ethnography Series (SAVES), a cooperative project of Broadside and ETSU's Department of Sociology and Anthropology. While employed by Broadside, Nave produced "Parking Lot Pickin' and Fiddlin' Around," a documentary which dealt with off-stage activity at an old-time fiddles convention. He also worked as a camera man and sound man on other SAVES projects.

Nave began working as an independent video producer who focused on Appalachian culture. In addition, Nave performed contractual work for hospitals, schools and industries, and individual professionals. Nave owned and managed an insurance agency in Mountain City, Tennessee. He died at Mountain City on January 18, 1993.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The David Larry Nave Collection consists of videotapes, manuscripts and slides. The tapes depict E. C. and Orna Ball of Rugby, Virginia, Deep Gap, North Carolina residents Willard and Ora Watson; and two comedians named Lynn and Morris, E. C. and Orna Ball play old-time country music; Willard Watson discusses his craft of toy making; and Ora Watson discusses quilting. The tapes are arranged alphabetically by name of the subject of the videos. Series II contains manuscripts and slides. The manuscripts contain rough drafts and supporting notes relating to a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) proposal for a documentary of E. C. and Orna Ball. The slides depict E. C. and Orna Ball and richard Blaustein of the Department of Sociology at East Tennessee State University at the August 1975 Mountain City, Tennessee Fiddlers Convention.

Organization: The collection is divided into two series: Series I, Video Tapes, number 1-12, 1976 and no date; and Series II, Other Materials, 1967, 1975-1976. Series I contains 13 3/4" videotapes, 6 Betacam SP Preservation Masters, and 12 VHS Access Copies. The two file folders are arranged with manuscripts placed first and slides second. The two folders are stored with small collections.

SERIES DESCRIPTION

Series I, VIDEOTAPES, No. 1-12, 1976 and no date.

This series contains 12 videotapes, which are 3/4" tapes produced by Nave and his associates. Tapes No. 1, 2, and 3 focus on E. C. and Orna, two old-time country music performers from Rugby, Virginia. The Balls perform religious and secular folk songs, with both doing vocals, E. C. playing guitar, and Orna playing accordion. Tape No. 4 recorded two singers-comedians, Lynn and Morris, as they performed in 1976 at a grade-school assembly in Mountain City, Tennessee. Tapes No. 5-12 concern Willard and Ora Watson of Deep Gap, North Carolina. Willard discussed his toy making and Ora focused on her quilting. The tapes are arranged alphabetically by surname of the subject of the tape.

NOTE: For all the Watson tapes Francine nave did the interviewing; Larry Nave did the camera work; and Daniel and Ann Blevins did the sound.

Series II, OTHER MATERIALS, 1967, 1975-1976.

This series contains two file folders of materials: the first one contains manuscript materials, while the second one contains slides. Folder one contains a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) proposal, rough drafts of that proposal, and notes for a documentary on E. C. and Orna Ball, dated October 20, 1967 and October 1976. Folder two contains slides of the August 1975 Mountain City Fiddlers Convention. The manuscript materials are place first and the slides second.

Songs performed are: "Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold My Body down;" "Early Bird Got the Worm;" and "Amazin' Grace" (instrumental version).
