BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Anne Newton served as the lifestyles editor for the Johnson City Press in the late 1980s. From May-September 1987 she ran a "Memories" column in the Lifestyles section. Local residents submitted photographs and stories about the memories elicited by these photographs.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Anne Newton Collection consists of the following: correspondence between Newton and donors of photographs; black and white photographic prints; and notes taken by Newton on the prints. Most of the prints depict early Johnson City schools and their classes. Photographs are copies of originals which date from 1910-38. The correspondence and notes date from 1987.

Organization: The collection is divided into two series: Series I, Photographs, 1910-1938, Box 1; and Series II, Correspondence and Notes, 1987, Box 1.

SERIES DESCRIPTION

Series I, PHOTOGRAPHS, 1910-1938, Box 1.

This series consists of 15 black and white photographic prints submitted to Johnson City Press lifestyles editor Anne Newton for her "Memories" column. Subjects covered include classes from early Johnson City elementary schools. These prints are copies of the originals. The prints are grouped by school, then arranged alphabetically by name of school within each school group. Prints are arranged chronologically by date of the original print.

Series II, CORRESPONDENCE AND NOTES, 1987 and no date, Box 1.

This series consists of letters sent to Newton by individuals who contributed photographs to the "Memories" column. Also included are notes Newton took on the photographs. The correspondence is arranged chronologically. The notes are not dated and are grouped according to the print or donor who is the subject of the notes.
