Provenance: The Bertram S. Allen, Jr. Collection was donated to the Archives of Appalachia by Bertram S. Allen, Jr. on September 24, 1987.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Bertram S. Allen, Jr., was born in Richmond, Virginia, in 1946. After graduating from Milligan College in 1967, he attended law school for a brief period before being drafted into military service in 1968. From 1968 to 1970, he served in Vietnam with the United States Army's 25th Infantry Division. Initially assigned to an artillery unit, he later wrote for the division newspaper and public information office.

Following his discharge from military service, he attended Lehigh University, where he earned M.Ed. (1972) and Ed.D. (1977) degrees in counseling. Employed by Milligan College since 1979, Allen is currently chair of social learning, professor of psychology, and director of counseling.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Bertram S. Allen, Jr. Collection documents the donor's military service (1968-1970) with the United States Army's 25th Division during the Vietnamese Conflict and provides information about the history of the 25th Division. The collection contains copies of documents and photographs from the donor's scrapbook. The photocopies include a few pages from Tropic Lightning: A History of the 25th Infantry Division; a letter, dated 30 January 1969, to PFC Bertram S. Allen, Jr., from his father; and articles written by Allen for Tropic Lightning News in 1969. The copied photographs portray Allen and fellow soldiers during military service in Vietnam and Vietnamese civilians. Some of the photographs were taken in 1969 or 1970, while the remainder are undated.

Organization: The collection is divided into two series: Series I, Photocopies, and Series II, Photographs and Negatives. Items in both series are arranged alphabetically, but in Series II the negatives are stored after the photographs.

SERIES DESCRIPTION

Series I, PHOTOCOPIES, 1969 and undated, Folder 1.

This series consists of photocopies of documents from the donor's scrapbook. The photocopies include a few pages from Tropic Lightning: A History of the 25th Infantry Division (date of publication unknown); a letter, dated 30 January 1969, to PFC Bertram S. Allen, Jr., from his father; and articles written by Allen for Tropic Lightning News in 1969.

The items in this series are arranged alphabetically within a single folder.

Series II, PHOTOGRAPHS AND NEGATIVES, 1969-1970 and undated, Folder 2.

This series consists of copies of photographs from the donor's scrapbook. The photographs portray Allen and fellow soldiers during military service in Vietnam and Vietnamese civilians. Some of the photographs were taken in 1969 or 1970, while the remainder are undated. The photographs are arranged alphabetically, while the negatives from which the photographs were produced are stored after the photographs.
