HISTORICAL NOTE

The Johnson City Foundry and Machine Works Company began operation in 1883 as the Miller and Crumley Foundry at the present sight of the Washington County Emergency Communications District building. The original foundry was located on the tracks of the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad, which later became the Southern Railway. The Miller and Crumley Foundry was purchased by Colonel Thomas E. Matson in 1884 and the company was granted a charter by the State of Tennessee that same year under the name of Johnson City Foundry and Machine Works. In 1907 the plant was moved from its Ashe Street location to the western half of its present location on Walnut Street in order to make room for the expansion of the Clinchfield Railroad.

The Walnut Street plant consisted of a machine shop, a foundry, and a blacksmith shop that were to provide service and repairs for the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad, which had just completed construction of a railroad line from Cranberry, North Carolina to Johnson City, Tennessee. By 1907 George W. Sitton had become the Plant Manager and developed the Sitton Slicer, a machine used by the American Cigar Box Lumber Company to slice veneers for their cigar boxes. With the addition of machinery design and construction, the Foundry quickly became a leading regional exporter of gray iron and brass castings and was the primary source of repairs for the regional railroads.

During World War II the Johnson City Foundry became one of the nation's leading producers of military equipment and hardware; the company received the "Distinguished Army-Navy E Award" in 1943 as recognition for their impressive production achievements. The company was purchased from the Setzer family in 1946 by George H. and May Ross McDowell. The Foundry continued to expand under the leadership of the McDowells, filling a wide range of regional business and construction needs. It fabricated steel for small building projects and large construction jobs such as the 750 tons of steel supplied to East Tennessee State College for the erection of the Memorial Gymnasium. With the advent of aluminum manufacturing, the Foundry quickly began moving away from the production of cast iron and steel to that of aluminum. As early as 1943 the Aluminum Company of America became the Foundry's largest customer and the Foundry continued to be ACA's primary supplier until the 1970s.

During the early 1980s, the company soon fell prey to declining demands for aluminum castings, inflation, and a gradual shrinking of the coal industry to which the Foundry was a major supplier. By 1984 the Johnson City Foundry had been sold to a Knoxville firm, Tenetek, and subsequently faced foreclosure in 1987. Prior to its closure, approximately 133 employees from Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina worked at the Johnson City plant.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Johnson City Foundry and Machine Works Collection documents the company's operation from 1902 to 1983. It consists of 186 ledgers and journals and 19 manuscript boxes of shop orders, purchase invoices, general accounting ledgers, pamphlets, personal notes, office files, union contracts, OSA files, Tennessee tour information, and photographs depicting the general operation and management of the Johnson City Foundry, its union activities, general Johnson City history, and the design of specialized Foundry equipment. Of particular interest are a set of time books and accounting ledgers dating from 1914 to 1915, a ledger of minutes dating from 1914 to 1915, and a ledger of minutes from Board of Directors meetings dating from 1902 that document the early operation and management of the Johnson City Foundry.
