BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Jeanne M. Rasmussen was born in Lubbock, Texas on April 4, 1934 to Carl and Pearl Hudspeth. She attended Baylor University, Waco, Texas, where she majored in English and received a B.A. degree in the spring of 1953. In August of that year she married George McGranahan, a cardiologist. They subsequently had three children: Jay, Georgia, and Gavin.

In the early 1960s Jeanne met and married Donald Rasmussen a pulmonary specialist who devoted much of his practice to black lung disease. From Salt Lake City, Utah, she moved in the early sixties to Beckley, West Virginia, where Donald practiced medicine. Jeanne's introduction to black lung disease and other pulmonary diseases which afflicted miners came through her husband's work. She also developed an interest in other aspects of miners' lives and began to photograph miners and their families, coal camps, and mining disasters.

In West Virginia, Jeanne worked for the Raleigh Register and WOAY-TV as a journalist. Through her husband, she became acquainted with Joseph A. "Jock" Yablonski, a United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) activist, who in 1969 asked her to be the treasurer for his presidential campaign to unseat incumbent UMWA president Tony Boyle. Jeanne accepted that offer and also became the West Virginia press representative for Yablonski's campaign. She actively campaigned for him in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky. Although Yablonski lost the election, he was preparing to contest the election results when he, his wife and daughter were murdered on December 31, 1969 by assassins acting under Boyle's instructions. After the murders, the Rasmussens, themselves the subjects of rumors, were told of dangers to their lives. Coal miners guarded them and their home. Both Jeanne and Donald testified at the 1974 murder trial of Tony Boyle.

As Jeanne's interest in and knowledge of coal mining and mines developed and expanded, she devoted her writing and photography skills to publicizing miner's health and safety issues, shoddy treatment by coal operators, and corruption in the UMWA. Her essays on mining and miners appeared in such publications as Mountain Life and Work, Miner's Voice, and the Charleston Gazette, while her photographs appeared in regional newspapers and in such national publications as Harper's, Newsweek, the Washington Post and Mountain Life and Work.

Rasmussen also photographed other aspects of Appalachian life. Portraits of the men, women, and children of Appalachia, and photographs of Appalachian landscapes were subjects for Rasmussen's photography. These photographs were both published and exhibited regionally and nationally. Fifteen of Jeanne Rasmussen's photographs were included in the traveling exhibition, "Workers and Allies: Female Participation in the American Labor Movement, 1824-1976," created by the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Service. This exhibit opened in the National Portrait Gallery and toured the United State from 1975-1977.

In 1974 Rasmussen moved to Reston, Virginia, where she resided until her death on January 30, 1992.

Series I, PERSONAL PAPERS, 1967-1982, Box 1.

This series contains correspondence to and from Rasmussen; personal financial records; and miscellaneous documents. The correspondence has been placed first, followed by financial records and miscellaneous documents. All materials are arranged chronologically within these categories of document types.

Series II, WRITINGS AND INTERVIEWS BY JEANNE M. RASMUSSEN, 1947; 1960-1978, Boxes 1-2.

This series consists of Rasmussen's "Hot Edge of Hell" manuscript on coal mining and articles derived from this manuscript which used that title; text for the "Dead End" manuscript; essays and miscellaneous writings on coal mining and other Appalachian topics. One folder in Subseries II-D contains quotations by writers other than Rasmussen. This series is divided into subseries as follows: Subseries II-A, "Hot Edge of Hell" Writings, 1968-1971 and No Date, Box 1; Subseries II-B, "Dead End," 1971, Box 2; Subseries II-C, Essays Written by Rasmussen, 1968-1972 and No Date, Box 2; and Subseries II-D, Miscellaneous Writings and Interviews by Rasmussen, 1947; 1960-1978.

Subseries II-A, "HOT EDGE OF HELL" WRITINGS, 1968-1971, Box 1.

This subseries consists of Rasmussen's unpublished manuscript on coal mining in Appalachia. The writings are arranged according to the Chapter/part arrangement assigned by Rasmussen. Chapter and part numbers and titles repeat, apparently as a result of revisions made by Rasmussen.

Subseries II-B, "DEAD END," 1971, Box 2.

This subseries contains the text for the pictorial work on strip mining which Rasmussen coauthored with journalist Bill Lucht. This book was supposed to be published in 1972 by Case Western Reserve University Press. But the authors had an impasse with the press over legal matters relating to the work's publication. Case Western thus did not publish the book. In the summer of 1972 Rasmussen and Lucht were unsuccessful in their attempt to have Doubleday publish "Dead End." The book never was published. The first folder in this subseries contains the "Dead End" text, while the second contains an empty folder written on by Rasmussen.

Subseries II-C, ESSAYS WRITTEN BY RASMUSSEN, 1968-1972, Box 2.

This subseries consists of essays Rasmussen wrote on topics relating to coal mining and to Appalachian culture. A number of these essays were published. The essays are arranged alphabetically by title.

Subseries II-D, MISCELLANEOUS WRITINGS AND INTERVIEWS BY RASMUSSEN, 1947; 1968-1975, Box 2.

This subseries contains short articles written by Rasmussen, quotations used by her in her writings and interviews conducted by her with women miners. The writings have been placed first and have been arranged alphabetically by title. The interviews follow the writings.

Series III, SCRAPBOOK MATERIALS AND LOOSE CLIPPINGS, 1968-1986, Box 2 and oversize folders.

This series contains clippings, letters, leaflets and pamphlets that Rasmussen kept in a scrapbook, and loose clippings. Topics related to coal mining, UMWA activities, and Rasmussen's writings are the focus of this series. The clippings have been placed first, followed by the scrapbook materials. The materials within these two groups are arranged chronologically.

Series IV, OTHER PRINTED MATERIALS, 1889; 1922-1933; 1969-1986, Box 2.

This series contains various types of printed materials. Included are issues of magazines saved by Rasmussen, poetry on coal mining, essays on coal mining and related topics, and miscellaneous articles and clippings on such persons as Donald L. Rasmussen and Joseph A. "Jock" Yablonski. Arrangement is alphabetical by title of written piece, author of the written work, or subject of the articles.

Series V, PHOTOGRAPHS, 1967-1977, Boxes 3-6.
