SERIES DESCRIPTION

Series I, CHRONOLOGICAL FILES, 1977-89, Boxes 1-21.

Series I contains materials which not only document the daily operations of the CEP offices but also reflect the many political, social and cultural interests and activities of the organization. The chronological files contain numerous types of documents, including correspondence from CEP staff to supporters and colleagues; correspondence between CEP staff members; articles on mining and related issues; and reports of CEP staff meetings and workshops. Most of the documents in this series are copies which were swapped among the CEP offices. These copies largely are duplicates of materials found in other series of the collection. A 1979 letter from CEP director Betty Jean Hall to archives director Richard Kesner, indicates that the chronological files began in an attempt to maintain copies of all CEP correspondence. But over time these files came to be repositories for copies of all types of documents. The series is divided into three subseries as follows: Subseries I-A, Oak Ridge Office Chronological Files, 1977-89; Subseries I-B, Legal Support Office (Dumfries) Chronological Files, 1979-88; and Subseries I-C, Regional Support Office Chronological Files, 1983-88. Materials are arranged chronologically.

Subseries I-A, OAK RIDGE OFFICE CHRONOLOGICAL FILES, 1977-1989, Boxes 1-8.

Subseries I-A contains materials generated by the main CEP office at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. These materials document the daily operations of the Oak Ridge office and provide information on projects supported and sponsored by CEP. Contained also in this subseries are copies of documents generated by the Legal Support Office (LSO) located at Dumfries, Virginia. These last-mentioned materials document the activities of the LSO. Included in the subseries are copies of the following: correspondence between CEP staff members; CEP staff and board meeting minutes; clippings on mining and related topics; memoranda on CEP projects, and legal case work done by the LSO. Materials are arranged chronologically by month, day, and year of the documents. Files which consist of copies received from the Dumfries Legal Support Office have been labelled "Dumfries office."

Subseries I-B, LEGAL SUPPORT OFFICE (DUMFRIES, VIRGINIA) CHRONOLOGICAL FILES, 1979-88, Boxes 8-19.

Subseries I-B contains materials generated by the CEP Legal Support Office located at Dumfries, Virginia and materials sent from the main office at Oak Ridge. These materials document the daily operation of the LSO, as well as the activities of the main CEP office at Oak Ridge. Included are correspondence, memoranda and meeting minutes of the LSO staff, together with materials which document the legal activities of Betty Jean Hall and her LSO staff. Among the important issues pursued by the LSO are gender discrimination in hiring by mining companies and the development of parental leave policies in the mining industry. Materials are arranged chronologically. Files which consist of copies received from the Oak Ridge office have been labelled "from Oak Ridge."

Subseries I-C, REGIONAL SUPPORT OFFICES CHRONOLOGICAL FILES, 1983-88, Boxes 19-21.

Subseries I-C contains materials generated by CEP's regional support offices located in Tazewell, Virginia; Bentleyville, Pennsylvania; and Denver, Colorado.
