164. Coal Mining Women, undated. This is an Appalshop (Whitesburg, Kentucky) tape narrated by Helen Lewis. A number of women miners are interviewed, among them the following: Barbara Angle, Westernport, Maryland; Nan Liverman, Paonia, California; Mavis Williams, Cumberland, Kentucky; Viola Cleveland, Middlesboro, Kentucky; Nancy Prater, Clairfield, Tennessee; Marilyn Vanderfleet, Harlan, Kentucky; Linda Sexton and Pat Farnsworth of Paonia, California. The tape discusses the history of women as miners, especially during World War II; superstitions related to the presence of women in mines; women as supporters of husbands and fathers who were miners; and the role of women during such strikes as the Brookside Strike, and during the 1976 Scotia mine disaster in Letcher County, Kentucky. The black lung compensation issue is discussed, as is the role of women in the UMWA and in bringing about improvement of safety conditions in mines. Betty Jean Hall, CEP is interviewed. Sampler of performances sponsored by the folklife center, together with Valle Crucis Community Center and Appalachian State University. Performances include folk music by the Silver Cloud String Band from Knoxville and square dancing. VHS

184. Lonnie Hatmaker Interview, undated (August 2, no year). Interview with Hatmaker, a coal operator. Hatmaker spoke to women miners and presented them with interview situations. It is not clear who sponsored this activity. VHS

186. Music, undated. This tape contains two labor songs, "Let Us Unite" and "Carry It On." For the former, video shows a guitar player and vocalist, neither of whom are fully pictured. There is no video for the later song. VHS
