BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Brian Chisom (1968- ) is a resident of Salem, Virginia and is currently completing his senior year as an English major at East Tennessee State University. As a junior in Dr. Fred Waage's fall 1989 English course, "Literature and Culture of the 1960s," Chisom completed a research paper entitled, "Appalachia in the Sixties: Decade of Reawakening and Change." After the semester was complete, the paper and accompanying audio cassette tape were placed in the archives at the insistence of Dr. Waage.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Brian Chisom Papers consist of a 23-page research paper and a 90-minute audio cassette tape containing commercially produced folk songs that depict the poverty of Appalachia. The paper describes economic, political, and educational issues surrounding the attempts to "revitalize" Appalachia by the federal government during the 1960s.
