"Southern Songbirds: The Women of Early Country and Old-Time Music" was a 13-part radio series developed in the late 1980s by Rachel Anne Goodman, at the time an employee of Appalshop in Whitesburg, Kentucky. The series focused on women who were important to the development of country and old-time music and aired on public radio stations in 1990.
The Southern Songbirds audio cassettes contain interviews, conducted by Rachel Anne Goodman, with women instrumental in the early development of country and old-time music. The audio cassettes also contain segments of these artists' music. Among the types of music recorded are country gospel, blues, old-time ballads, and western-style music. (Note: This collection contains an addendum.)

This series contains the seven audio cassettes which make up the collection. The tapes contain the final 28-minute programs of interviews and music. The tapes aired in 1990, but it is not certain when the tapes actually were completed. Each tape has been assigned a number and arranged consecutively according to that number. The tapes are stored according to accession number in the audio-visual storage area.
All tapes are 60-minute audio cassettes.
