Provenance: The Helen Bullard Collection was acquired by the Tennessee State Library and Archives in 1992. A microfilm copy of the collection was transferred to the Archives of Appalachia on September 2, 1992.
Access: The collection is open for research.
Processing Information: Michelle Saas, J. Stinson and Scott Schwartz completed processing, and the microfilm reels were opened to researchers on March 12, 1993.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Helen Bullard Kreckniak (1902- ) is an Appalachian artist, who specializes in carving wooden dolls. She also is the author of the 1977 publication, Crafts and Craftsmen of the Tennessee Mountains. Bullard joined the United Federation of Dolls Clubs in 1951 and in that same year also was accepted into the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild. Photographs of her carvings were included in the 1965 and 1975 publications of the American Doll Artist. The Tennessee State Museum displayed an exhibit of Bullard's primitive chestnut sculptures in Nashville in 1972.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Helen Bullard Collection consists of two microfilm reels containing images of meeting agenda and minutes, correspondence, newsletters, newsclippings, subject files, a grant proposal, and miscellaneous papers. The material documents Bullard's activities as a Tennessee artist and the writing of her book. In addition, the papers describe other types of handicraft work encountered in the Southeastern United Sates.
