Provenance: The Eastman Chemical Company History was donated to the university by the company and transferred to the Archives of Appalachia in December 1992 by Dr. Roy S. Nicks, interim president, East Tennessee State University.

Access: The collection is open for research.

Processing Information: Ed Speer completed processing, and the collection was opened to researchers in June 1993.

HISTORICAL NOTE

In 1920 George Eastman of Eastman Kodak Company purchased a wood distillation plant in Kingsport, Tennessee and founded the Tennessee Eastman Corporation to make Eastman Kodak independent of European sources of chemicals critical to the manufacture of photographic film. In 1951 Tennessee Eastman Corporation became Tennessee Eastman Company, Division of Eastman Kodak Company. Tennessee Eastman Company became part of the Eastman Chemicals Division in 1968, and in 1990 Eastman Chemical Division became Eastman Chemical Company, a division of Eastman Kodak Company.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Eastman Chemical Company History consists of a booklet, Years of Glory, Times of Change, 1920-1990, and three VHS videocassettes, Against All Odds, 1920-1945, Coming of Age, 1945-1975, and Momentum to Change the World, 1975-1990, published by the company. The booklet and videocassettes provide information about the history of Eastman Chemical Company from its founding in 1920 as Tennessee Eastman Corporation to 1990. Subjects covered include the development and production of company products, the development of chemical processes, biographical information on company executives, the formation of subsidiaries and construction of new plants, and the company's vision for the future. The booklet contains a chronology and bibliography, while the video-cassettes contain interviews with company executives.
