Napoleon Lafayette Murrell born September 25, 1859 in Kentucky and married Nannie Massey Snyder born January 11, 1870. Murrell was a book salesman for the Methodist Publishing Company and met Nannie Snyder when he stayed at Snyder House in Elizabethton. There were three children born to the union, Orin Roger Murrell (died at two years of age of meningitis), Hugh Loftus Murrell (born February 14, 1893), and Pauline Murrell Stone (born February 25, 1908).
In 1897, the Murrells leased the Cloudland Hotel on Roan Mountain and ran the hotel for ten summers. The Murrells ran the Lynnwood Hotel in Elizabethton from 1907-1909. They then leased and operated the Colonial Hotel in Johnson City, Tennessee from the St. John family from 1910-1920. The Colonial Hotel contained 166 rooms with 132 rooms being bedrooms. In 1920, they left Johnson City and went to Unaka for six months, then left to run Hotel Marion in Marion, Virginia.
The Murrell Family Collection contains Colonial Hotel menus, newsclippings, receipts, two audio tapes, and photographs pertaining to the Murrell family.
Organization: The collection is divided into three series: Series I, Menus, Newsclippings, and Receipts, Folders 1-3, 1896-1987; Series II, Pauline Murrell Stone Interview, Folder 4, 1993; and Series III, Photographs, Folder 5-6, 1883-1927.

Series I contains menus from the Colonial Hotel, newsclippings of the Cloudland Hotel and Unaka Springs Hotel, and receipts dating 1896-1909. The material are arranged alphabetically by subject or document type.
Series II contains two audio tapes, a microcassette tape, and a cassette tape copy of the interview of Pauline Murrell Stone conducted by Norma Myers.
Series III contains thirty photographs of family members and friends of the Murrell family. The photographs are arranged alphabetically.
