Series I, FESTIVALS AND FIDDLERS’ CONVENTIONS, 1969-84 and undated, tapes RO:1-137.

This series consists of audiotapes recorded by Bernard Rousseau at country music festivals and fiddlers’ conventions held in North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia. One of the tapes includes an off-the-air broadcast, and one tape consists of edited excerpts from the Union Grove Fiddlers’ Convention. One Union Grove tape is not dated. Types of music represented include old-time fiddle music, bluegrass, gospel, and old-time country music. Tapes are arranged chronologically. Rousseau assigned each tape a distinct number and often further identified the recordings by part designations (e.g., A, B, S-10, 5 etc.). These numbers have been retained in the tape list.

Series II, PERFORMANCES IN CLUBS, CONCERTS AND PRIVATE PARTIES, 1957-83 and undated, tapes RO:138 -163.

This series consists of audiotapes recorded by Rousseau at clubs, concerts, and private parties in the Washington, D. C. area and in Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. These performances are mainly of bluegrass and country music. As in Series I, tapes are arranged chronologically. Rousseau assigned each tape a distinct number and often further identified the recordings by part designations (e.g., A, B, S-10, 5 etc.). These numbers have been retained in the tape list.

Series III, STUDIO TAPES, 1967-83 and undated, tapes RO:164-180.

This series consists of audiotapes made at Rousseau’s recording studio in Kingston, Tennessee. Some of these tapes are studio masters and submasters, while others are compilations made from different performances. Tapes are arranged chronologically. Rousseau did not assign his own numbers to these tapes. Master tapes have been placed before submasters, with backups placed after submasters.

Series IV, RADIO BROADCASTS, 1983-88 and undated, tapes RO:181-187.

This series consists of radio broadcasts of bluegrass and country music programs taped off the air. Tapes are arranged chronologically. Rousseau’s numbers have been retained in the tape list.

Series V, PRINTED DOCUMENTATION, 1957-84 and undated.

This series consists of printed documentation. The series is divided into Subseries A, Tape Logs and Supporting Materials, 1957-82 and undated; and Subseries B, Publications, Printed Materials, and Photographs, 1969-84 and undated. Arrangement in Subseries A is sequential, according to the numbers assigned to tapes in Series I - IV, while arrangement in Subseries B is alphabetical by title of publication, type of document, or festival. Not every tape in the collection had accompanying tape logs, photos, or other printed materials. In addition, materials included with tapes did not always refer to the accompanying recording. [For example, included with tape RO-148, a recording of performances at the Turf Club in Laurel, Maryland, are photos from the Carter Stanely Memorial Performance held at College Park, Maryland, in 1967.] Miscellaneous materials have been placed at the end of Subseries B.
