The Appalachian League is a minor league of baseball teams located throughout the southern Appalachian region. The league began play in 1911, disbanded in 1914, and resumed play in 1921. During the 1925 season, financial difficulties caused the league to fold once again. In 1937, the Appy League, as many called it, started up again and operated continuously until the 1956 season, when financial problems caused the league to suspend operations. In 1957, the league returned to action as a short-season rookie league. As of the present writing, the league remains a short-season rookie league, with entries in ten southern Appalachian towns. Included among the Appy League towns are Johnson City, Kingsport, and Elizabethton, Tennessee; Bristol, Pulaski, and Danville, Virginia; and Bluefield, West Virginia.
The Appy League Logbook was a radio program broadcast during the summer months, 1995-98, on WETS-FM radio, the public radio station affiliated with East Tennessee State University. The first series of programs, entries one through thirty, aired in 1995. Tom Burns narrated the five-minute audio logbook entries on the Appalachian League, its history, and its players. The Appy League Logbook Tapes consist of two audiocassettes of the 1995 entries. Tape 1 contains entries 1 through 18, while Tape 2 contains entries 19 through 30.
