Provenance: The Gordon Aronhime Collection was donated to the Archives of Appalachia by Hal Smith, Johnson City, Tennessee on May 21, 1996.

Access: The collection is open for research.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Gordon Aronhime was a native of Roanoke, Virginia and lived most of his life in Bristol, Virginia where he became a well-known local historian and author. He was a graduate of Virginia High School and received an undergraduate and a master's degree in history from East Tennessee State University. During World War II, Aronhime served as a warrant officer with army intelligence in the Caribbean and at the Pentagon. For many years, he was a writer and photographer for the Bristol Herald Courier newspaper, for whom he wrote an extensive series of historical articles on the early settlement period of southwest Virginia and East Tennessee. He died October 25, 1983 in Bristol at the age of 72.

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Gordon Aronhime Collection consists of copies of articles written by Aronhime on the history of southwest Virginia and East Tennessee; correspondence from Aronhime to Hal Smith; printed abstracts of deeds recorded in Sullivan County, Tennessee; and a brief history of the Holston-Clinch region during the 18th century.

Organization: Material is arranged alphabetically by subject and filed chronologically with undated material following dated material.
