Provenance:  The photographs of the Carol Berry Collection were donated to the Archives of Appalachia on February 1, 1999 by Carol Berry of Elizabethton, Tennessee.

 

Access:  The collection is open for research.

 

Processing Information:  Georgia Greer completed processing the collection,  and the collection was opened for research in February 2008.

 

HISTORICAL NOTE

 

Paul Hadley Berry was born March 3, 1910 in Carter County, Tennessee.  He married Velma Lou Rupe on March 17, 1939.  To this union was born a daughter, Carol Randy Berry.  Paul Hadley Berry was the son of Edgar R. Berry and Effie L. Fair.  Berry worked at Bemberg, and he retired from Montgomery Ward in Elizabethton, Tennessee.  He was a member of First Christian Church in Elizabethton, Tennessee.  Berry died on August 21, 1992 and is buried in the Happy Valley Memorial Park.

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

 

The collection consist of 50 black and white photographs of Paul Hadley Berry were taken during World War II, c. 1945.  The photographs were believed to have been taken primarily while stationed in Okinawa.   Included are scenes in Hawaii, Okinawa, and unidentified locations.
