HISTORICAL NOTE

 

The Appalachian Student Committee was a group of student activists at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), Blacksburg, Va., in the early 1970s. The committee focused on supporting grassroots organizations locally in Blacksburg, as well as throughout the Appalachian region. The committee was involved with researching topics of concern in Appalachia such as health and welfare, mining, and economic development. The student committee also promoted education of the region within the university community.

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

 

The Appalachian Student Committee Records consist of one file folder of material relating to the activities of the Appalachian Student Committee at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Virginia. The Appalachian Student Committee was highly involved and concerned with social, economic, and environmental issues in their local community as well as throughout the Appalachian region. Materials in the collection include pamphlets, broadsides, meeting agenda, and articles on grassroots organizing efforts in the Appalachian region.

 

Note:  A bibliography on Appalachia was removed and placed in the Appalachian Vertical Files under the heading “Appalachian Region, Southern—Bibliography.” One issue of Mountain Life and Work (June 1972-73) has been removed and placed in the Appalachian Publications Vertical Files under that title.
