ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION

Provenance: The Appalachian Farm Photographs were transferred to the Archives of Appalachia by Michael Smith, art department, East Tennessee State University. Smith transferred the photos in his capacity as a member of the Tennessee Committee for the Humanities (TCH). The prints, part of the American Farm Project funded by the TCH, were exhibited at ETSU in April 1979.

Originally the prints, negatives and contacts were stored with the Appalachian Photographic Archives (APA) under various subject headings. In January 1991 the prints, negatives and contacts were brought together and the collection restored as an entity.

Access Restriction: Prints may not be duplicated without the permission of the photographer. Otherwise, the collection is open for research.

Processing Information: Marie Tedesco completed processing, and the collection was open for research in 1991.

 

HISTORICAL NOTE

The Appalachian Farm Photographs were exhibited as part of the ETSU Appalachian Farm Exhibit in April 1979. The exhibit was part of the Appalachian Farm Project funded by the Tennessee Committee for the Humanities. Six photographers took photos for the exhibit: Jack Schrader, Bill Blanton, John Anderson, Earl Carter, Kenneth Murray, and Craigie Hemenway.

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The prints depict various aspects of farming and rural life in Appalachia. Included also are portraits of rural and farm men, women and children, and rural landscapes.

Organization: Prints have been grouped according to photographer; each print and its corresponding negative have been assigned a unique AF number. The prints of each photographer have been put in separate envelopes and placed in folder 1. The negatives and contacts have been placed in folder 2. The collection is stored in the photographic storage area.
