Provenance:  The papers of the Barrus Family were donated to the Archives of Appalachia on August 8, 2001 by Betty Jane Hylton on behalf of Frances Dugger Rowan, Bishop, Carlifornia.

Processing Information:  Georgia Greer completed processing the collection, and the collection was opened for research in May 2007.

 

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

 

The Barrus name descends from Joshua Barrowe, who was the son of John Barrowe born in 1609 and died in 1692.  John came to Salem, Massachusetts in 1637 from Yarmouth, England.  John Barrowe was married twice, first to Anne, who was born in 1597, the mother of Joshua Barrowe.  John Barrowe’s second wife was Deborah. Joshua Barrus married Deliverance Wedge, and he died in 1748 in Attleboro, Massachusetts.

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

 

The papers of the Barrus Family consist of one file folder that contains a letter to Anna Louise Ward from Aunt Anna Cadle dated January 1922, and a day book containing the genealogy of John Barrowe from England dated 1922.  The folder is stored in Small Collection Box 25.
