ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION

Provenance: On September 9, 1979, the company records and personnel files of Magnet Mills, Inc. were donated to the Archives of Appalachia by Mrs. G. D. (Katherine) Hoskins of Clinton, Tennessee. Mrs. Hoskins was the former secretary to the Chairman of the Board of Magnet Mills, and was also the editor of the Mill newspaper, "The Magnet."

RESTRICTION
In accordance with existing privacy laws and regulations, individual personnel files in the collection are restricted and may not be viewed or reproduced without either the written permission of the individual whose file it was or documentation (death certificate, obituary notice, etc.) presented to the archives staff that the individual whose file is being requested is deceased at the time of the researcher's request to use the file.

 

HISTORICAL NOTE

Magnet Mills, Inc. of Clinton, Tennessee opened its doors in 1906 as Magnet Knitting Mills. In 1929, the Mill was incorporated as Magnet Mills, Inc., a locally owned and operated hosiery mill. In 1965, the mill was sold to Messrs. Frank and Samuel Burd of San Francisco, California. After the sale, the local management of the mill remained largely unchanged. In March 1967, a prolonged strike with Local 2125, Textile Workers Union of America, resulted in a management decision to close the mill down permanently.

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

All company files are arranged according to record type. The collection includes contract negotiations and agreements, correspondence grouped by subject, individual subject files, management records, grievances and grievance arbitrations, insurance records, personnel records, publications and newsclippings. An Index, by person and subject, follows the Box and Folder list.

Series I, CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS AND AGREEMENTS, 1944-1966, Boxes 1-7.

This series includes contract negotiations and agreements between Magnet Mills and Local 125 of the American Federation of Hosiery Workers, up to 1960, and Local 2125, Textile Workers Union of America, thereafter. All documents, minutes, drafts, and negotiation related correspondence are included in this series and are arranged in chronological order.

This subseries includes documents pertaining to contract negotiations between the management of Magnet Mills, Inc. and the representatives of the Union, and they are arranged in chronological order.

Subseries I-B, AGREEMENTS, 1944-66, Box 7.

This subseries includes "second drafts" of agreements between Magnet Mills and the representative Union, as well as the finished Agreements. Finished Agreements are in the form of 4" by 6" booklets. This subseries is arranged chronologically.

This subseries includes information forwarded to Magnet Mills by Constangy and Prowell law firm of Atlanta, Georgia. It deals with new government rulings regarding labor-management relations and is arranged chronologically.

Subseries III-C, DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT SECURITY, 1940-69, Box 16.

This subseries includes information forwarded to Magnet Mills by the Department of Employment Security during the years 1940-69 and is arranged in chronological order.

Subseries III-D, LITIGATION AGAINST TWUA, LOCAL 2125, 1960-67, Box 19.

This subseries, though small, deals extensively with Magnet Mills' suit against the Textile Workers Union of America, Local 2125, especially with regard to actions by union members during the strike of 1966-67. The subseries is arranged chronologically.

Subseries III-E, T.A. WRIGHT (LABOR INFORMATION), 1946-50, Box 21.

This subseries includes information on labor-management Relations as forwarded to Magnet Mills by Mr. T.A. Wright, Magnet Mills' lawyer during the years 1946-50, and is arranged chronologically.

This series contains grievance reports and the arbitration awards arising from those reports. The series is arranged in alphanumerical order by grievance file number.

This subseries includes surviving grievance reports during the years 1948-66 and is arranged chronologically and in alphanumerical order by grievance file number.

Subseries V-B, GRIEVANCE ARBITRATIONS AND AWARDS, 1964-66, Boxes 37-38.

This subseries includes surviving grievance arbitration hearings and awards during the years 1964-66 and is arranged chronologically and alphanumerically by grievance file number.

Series VI, INSURANCE RECORDS, 1944-69, Boxes 39-43.

This series contains the company records dealing with the various group life, health, and hospitalization insurance policies held by Magnet Mills during the dates listed. Claims against the various policies, especially hospitalization claims, are also included in this series. All correspondence dealing directly with individual claims has also been included here instead of in Series II. Series VI is arranged alphabetically by the issuing company.

Series VII, PERSONNEL RECORDS, 1944-69, Boxes 44-133.

This series includes all personnel records of Magnet Mills' workers employed during the years 1944-69. Some of those workers employed by the plant prior to 1944 but who worked into the period 1944-69 are also included. However, the majority of personnel files for the period prior to 1944 is not included. In all likelihood, they were discarded when these files were standardized in the post-World War II period. The series is arranged by employee name in alphabetical order.

Series VIII, PUBLICATIONS, 1944-69, Box 134.

This series includes publications and publication materials for the mill newspaper, "The Magnet." Also included are the mailing list for the years 1958-62, the galley proofs for the 1956-58 editions, and the mill's 50th anniversary issue. The series is arranged in chronological order.

Series IX, NEWSCLIPPINGS, September-October 1941, December 1966-March 1967, Box 134.

This series contains all newsclippings collected from the various newspapers serving Anderson County, Tennessee regarding the strikes of 1941 and of 1966-67 at Magnet Mills. The series is arranged in chronological order.
