BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

William Burr Harrison, Jr. was born November 19, 1894 in Johnson City, Tennessee to William Burr Harrison, Sr. and Cornelia Miller Harrison. Harrison attended Johnson City public schools, and for the academic year 1911-12, he attended East Tennessee State Normal School (ETSNS). At ETSNS, he was active in sports, particularly tennis and basketball. After leaving ETSNS, Harrison accepted a position as a clerk for the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio Railway, where he worked until 1920. In that year he established the Burr Harrison Studios in Johnson City. Harrison produced an extensive body of photographs documenting life in the Johnson City area, c. 1920-50. Beginning in the 1940s he increasingly dedicated his work to commercial and portrait photography.

Harrison married Mayme Bryan and they had one son, Dr. W. B. Harrison, III and two daughters, Mrs. Rodney Skipworth, and Mrs. Steger Preston. The older Harrison was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Johnson City where he served as an elder, and a member of the Brotherhood Bible Class. Harrison died May 31, 1978 at his residence in Johnson City.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Burr Harrison Photographs consists of 377 photographic images (prints and negatives) depicting Johnson City and environs circa 1881-1958. The collection represents only a portion of Harrison's work, as much of it did not survive. The collection centers on photographs of commercial buildings in downtown Johnson City; industries, residences, apartment houses and churches in the city; buildings and activities at Mountain Home; and buildings at East Tennessee State Normal School (ETSNS). Some of the photos which date from the first decade of the twentieth century probably were taken by another photographer and copied by Harrison.

When the Burr Harrison Photographs were originally placed in the Archives of Appalachia, archives staff integrated the collection into the Appalachian Photographic Archives (APA) and assigned each negative in the collection a unique APA negative number. Photographic prints were matched to corresponding negatives and marked with the unique negative number. The collection included both original and copy negatives and prints. There is no record to indicate whether Burr Harrison or someone else made the copy negatives and prints.

In 1989, the Burr Harrison Photographs were separated from the Appalachian Photographic Archives and established as a separate collection. At this time, the processing archivist assigned each image in the collection a new sequential number (for example, BH-1). A list of images, arranged by the Burr Harrison sequential number follows the Series description page.

Organization: The collection is divided into two series: Series I, Prints, c. 1881-1958, and undated Boxes 1-3, 6-7, Oversized folder 1; and Series II, Negatives, c. 1903-1958, and undated Boxes 4-5 and 8. The photographic negatives and prints are according to size and format. Two oversized prints of the 1924 senior class, ETSNS, and the 1925 senior class, East Tennessee State College (ETSC), have been stored in map cabinets by accession number. These two photos were taken for the school's yearbook, Old Hickory.

This series consists of both the original and copy black and white prints which depict Johnson City and environs. The series is divided into two subseries: Subseries I-A, Original Prints, c. 1903-50, Box 1; and Subseries I-B, Copy Prints, 1930-50, Boxes 2-3.

This subseries contains original black and white prints which depict Johnson City and environs. The list of images contains a description of each print, and notations about the number of copies available and the condition of the prints. Each print has an APA or UPA number and a corresponding BH number. Prints are arranged sequentially according to these numbers.

Subseries I-B, COPY PRINTS, c. 1903-58 and undated, Boxes 2-3. (BH numbers BH-1 through BH-3; BH-5; BH-8 through BH-17; BH-27 through BH-29; BH-36; BH-39 through BH-40; BH-43 through BH-44; BH-46 through BH-50; BH-62 through BH-63; BH-65 through BH-67; and BH-166 through BH-167.)

Many of the oversized prints are contacts made from the original negatives. The 8" x 10" and 5" x 7" prints are copies made from copy negatives, as opposed to the old original large-format negatives made by Harrison early in his career. It is not clear if Harrison made the copy negatives. The prints are grouped by size with oversized prints placed first, 5" x 7" prints placed second, followed by 8" x 10" prints. Within each size grouping prints are arranged sequentially according to their BH numbers. APA numbers have been retained for record keeping purposes.
