Evelyn Gaunt McDonald was a native of Johnson City, Tennessee. She was the daughter of James and Eva Price Gaunt. McDonald attended East Tennessee State Normal School and the Cincinnati Observatory of Music. She married William A. McDonald, a native of Greene County. They had one son, William A. McDonald, Jr. McDonald, Sr. was a newsman for the Johnson City newspapers and for WJCW radio and WJHL television. He died at the age of 85 on February 18, 1985 at the Mountain Home Veterans Administration Center, Johnson City, Tennessee.
Evelyn Gaunt McDonald was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Johnson City Garden Club. She attended St. John's Episcopal Church in Johnson City. She died at the age of 82 on December 28, 1987 at Asbury Center, Johnson City, Tennessee.
The McDonald Collection contains two distinct types of documents: photographic prints which primarily depict Gaunt and McDonald family members and friends, 1892-1922; and yearbooks of the Johnson City Garden Club, 1947-1978.
Organization: The prints have been placed in Series I, Photographic Prints 1892-1922. This series is divided into two subseries: Subseries I-A, Gaunt and McDonald Family Members, 1892-1922, Box 1; and Subseries I-B, Other Prints, 1900-18, Box 1, and map cabinets, oversize. Series II, Johnson City Garden Club Yearbooks, 1947-78, is also stored in Box 1.

Each print has been assigned a discrete EGM number. Prints are arranged by these numbers. This subseries contains 42 black and white prints of various sizes. The prints depict Gaunt and McDonald family members and friends. Some prints are portraits, while others are candid shots.
Subseries I-B, OTHER PRINTS, 1900-1918, Box 1 and Map Cabinets, Oversize.
This series contains 13 black and white photographic prints of various subjects including, for example, the 1908 Johnson City flood, the Taylor Livery Stable, and Big Stone Gap, Virginia. The last-mentioned prints are oversized ones which are stored in the map cabinets according to accession number.
This series contains the Johnson City Garden Club yearbooks, 1947-1978. The yearbooks include membership lists and events sponsored by the garden club. The yearbooks are arranged chronologically by year.
