BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Isabel Martin was born c. 1902 in Durham, North Carolina, where she attended elementary and high school. She earned a BA. in education from Trinity College (later Duke University) in 1923 and a MA. in education from Duke University in 1932. During the 1920s, she taught in the public schools of North Carolina, in the summer extension school of Duke University at Lake Junaluska, and at the training school, Western North Carolina State College, Cullowhee, North Carolina. At Cullowhee, Martin met P. W. Alexander, who in 1929 moved to Johnson City, Tennessee to supervise the training school at East Tennessee State Teachers College. Martin accepted Alexander's offer to move to East Tennessee State and become the supervising teacher of the fifth grade at the training school.

Around 1953, Martin became involved in directing a week long conservation camp held at Buffalo Mountain State Park the first week in May. The camp utilized East Tennessee State science and conservation instructors, together with other local conservation experts. The camp became quite successful and continued to operate until Martin's retirement in 1971.

Martin was initiated into the Alpha Tau Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi honorary society for education majors on July 9, 1931, at Duke University. She was one of the founders of the Zeta Iota Chapter at East Tennessee State on June 3, 1947. On November 18, 1965, Martin received one of the first honor keys given by Zeta Iota Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi. Martin retired from teaching in 1971. Since that time she has resided at Appalachian Christian Village in Johnson City, Tennessee.
