ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION

Provenance: The Phi Kappa Phi, Chapter 112 Records were donated to the University Archives by Greg Bishop, Department of Environmental Health, East Tennessee State University, on September 13, 1991.

Access: The collection is open for research with the following exception: files containing student identification memberships, grades, course work, and other educational records are restricted in accordance with laws prohibiting access to student records and may not be examined by researchers.

Processing Information: Ned Irwin and Vinita Whittaker completed processing the collection, and the collection was opened for research in April 1998.

HISTORICAL NOTE

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi was started by a group of 10 students at the University of Main at Orono in 1897. The honor society was originally called the Lambda Sigma Eta, but it was soon changed to the Morrill Society, in honor of Senator Justin Morrill the Sponsor of the congressional act which provided for land-grant colleges in the United States. In 1900, it was transferred into a national society and, at the same time the society was renamed Phi Kappa Phi, from the initial letters of the Greek words forming its adopted motto: "Philosophia Krateito Photon ("Let the love of learning rule mankind.")

On December 3, 1969, word was received by Miss Ella V. Ross, sponsor for Kappa Lambda Local Honor Society, that the Executive Council of the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, at its meeting in Los Angeles, had approved the petition to establish a Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi at East Tennessee State University. The initial meeting of potential members of the ETSU chapter was held February 3, 1970 with Dean Ella Ross presiding. The chapter has been active since this date. The chapter has honored students for academic achievement and scholarship with membership.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Phi Kappa Phi, chapter 112 Records contain materials relating to the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi on both the local and national level and document the organizations development and activities.The Collection includes administrative, committee, financial, and membership records, along with miscellaneous subject files and photographs.

Organization: The collection is arranged into six series as follows: Series I, Administrative Records, 1969-1990; Series II, Committee Records, 1972-1990; Series III, Financial Records, 1972-1988; Series IV, Membership Records, 1970-1991; Series V, Subject Files, 1970-1990; and Series VI, Photographs, 1987 and undated.

Series I, Administrative Records, 1969-1990, Box 1.

This series contains information relating to the administration of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Chapter 112 and includes correspondence involving both the local Chapter and its relations with the national organization, along with the chapter constitution, bylaws, and handbook. Materials are arranged alphabetically according to subject matter.

Series II, Committee Record, 1972-1990, Box 2.

This series includes the minutes of the Phi Kappa Phi Executive Committee meetings and guidelines for East Tennessee State University Standing Committees. Materials are arranged alphabetically according to subject matter.

Series III, Phi Kappa Phi, Financial Record, 1972-1988, Boxes 2-3.

This series contains financial information relating to the operation and maintenance of Phi Kappa Phi, Chapter 112 and includes records of dues and contributions, reimbursement requests, shopping orders transfer vouchers, account boons, and job tickets. Materials are arranged alphabetically according to subject matter.

Series IV, Membership Records, 1970-1991, Boxes 3-7.

This series contains records of student and faculty membership in the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Chapter 112. Also included are applications for initiation into the society and information concerning the biannual initiation banquet. Membership names and addresses and student lists are included in addition to a summary of special memberships and awards. The materials are arranged alphabetically according to subject matter and then chronologically. Those records containing student educational records are restricted and may not be researched.

Series V, Subject Files, 1970-1990, Boxes 7-9.

This series contains materials relating to subjects concerning Phi Kappa Phi and includes various forms, certificates, and applications relating to membership and participation in the society, newsclippings, handbooks, and pamphlets which pertain to the history, operation, and maintenance of Phi Kappa Phi on the local and national levels. This series document fellowships, scholarships, and Triennenial Conventions. Materials are arranged alphabetically according to subject matter.

This series contains three photographs depicting the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi initiation ceremony.
