ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION

Provenance: The Gretchen Hyder Collection were donated to East Tennessee State University after the death of Miss Hyder in August 1962 and were stored in the Sherrod Library (ETSU). The collection was transferred to University Archives on May 2, 1979.

Access: The collection was opened for research in January 1981.

Processing Information: The Archives Staff completed processing the collection in 1981.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Gretchen Hyder was born in Carter County, Tennessee, October 18, 1896, the daughter of Dr. Nat E. and Eliza Treadway Hyder. She graduated from Milligan College in 1922, received her Master's degree from Peabody College in 1929, and did graduate work at Columbia University.

For several years Miss Hyder was supervisor of the schools of Carter County, and in 1938 she joined the faculty of East Tennessee State College as a supervisor of the elementary grades for East Tennessee. In the spring of 1961, Miss Hyder retired from the College and passed away the following year, on August 26, 1962. Miss Hyder had memberships in the Daughters of the American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma, American Association of University Women, East Tennessee Education Association, Tennessee Education Association and National Education Association.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The papers of Gretchen Hyder include correspondence between Miss Hyder and educational officials, teachers, speakers for workshops, lists of members, reports, plans, programs and bulletins of conferences. The arrangement of the collection is alphabetical as there are no series.
