SERIES DESCRIPTIONS
Series I, Subject Files, 1934-1995 and undated.
Series I consists of materials documenting Barrette's life and career. It especially focuses on her work as a librarian, library educator, and consultant, who trained librarians in the library science program at ETSU for work in school, public, and academic library careers. Her involvement as a faculty member and later an active member of the university's retirement association and as a consultant in the construction of the Washington County-Jonesborough, Tenn. Library are also covered in the series as are events related to the university in general. Materials include correspondence, newspaper clippings, speeches, school papers, and other writings of Mrs. Barrette, course material, photographs, blueprints, and miscellaneous printed matter. The series is arranged in alphabetical order by the subject content of the folders or document type. Oversized materials (primarily blueprints) have been removed and placed in the map cabinet under the accession number 452. Grade books and students records have been placed after the general subject files and are restricted from use by researchers in compliance with privacy laws related to student records.
Series II, Photographs, c. 1952-1985
and undated. Small Photographic Collections Box 5
Series II consists of 54 black and white and 21 color photographs documenting Elise Draper Barrette's life and career. Most of the images are of Mrs. Barrette either individually or in group poses. However, photographs of other individuals, groups, and places are included in the series. Several photographs relate to the library science program and students at ETSU. Other images relate to various people and places, including ETSU officials such as Dr. Burgin Dossett, to President Richard Nixon's visit to campus in 1970, and to the groundbreaking for the Washington County-Jonesborough, Tenn. Library (March 22, 1985). When identified, the individuals have been included the collection index. The photographs have been separated into folders as follows: photographs of Mrs. Barrette individually or with others, photographs of people and places that have been identified (these are then arranged in alphabetical order by name), and photographs of people and places that could not be identified. The photographs, though largely undated, appear to cover chiefly the period from the 1940s to the 1960s. The three folders of photographs are housed in Small Photographic Collections Box 5.
