How to Use the Archives

We are committed to making our collections accessible to the public. Yet, as archivists, we are responsible for preserving collections entrusted to our care. The following guidelines ensure that our materials will be preserved for future generations.

Laurel Falls Sign the Register on entering and leaving each day.
Complete a Registration Form. A Photo ID is required, e.g., an institutional ID or driver's license.
Leave coats, briefcases, and the like in reading room lockers.
Use materials in the Archives reading room.
Take notes in pencil. Computers and recorders
may be used if they do not disturb other patrons.
Do not deface archival materials. Use extreme care when handling fragile items.
Use one box at a time. Use one folder at a time. Keep items in their folders.
Keep items in the exact order found. Do not rearrange items. Tell staff, if you find a mistake.
Cite collections in full, e.g., James H. Quillen Papers, Archives of Applachia, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee.
Observe copyright. Secure permission to publish.
Do not smoke, eat, or drink beverages in the Archives. Use of cell phones is not permitted in the Archives Reading Room.

Photo duplication

The Archives will photocopy selected research materials. Our Access Services and Fees Policy, along with the necessary forms, can be found under Services.
