A. Goforth Collection, acc.80, APA 255
This
photograph from the Goforth Collection was taken in 1909 and shows Lions Bluff
and Roan Mountain in Tennessee from the Pumpkin Patch Mountains in North Carolina.
You can see some of the places that have been cleared on the mountainsides,
either by the people who lived in these mountains or perhaps by lumber companies
who were seeking specific types and sizes of trees. Unlike the forests of the
Pacific Northwest, which are made up of one type of tree depending on the location,
the Southern Appalachian hardwood forests are made up of several types of trees.
Therefore, spots of clearing often appear, as some companies only wanted one
particular species of wood.
