Evans Davis Collection, APA 693
This
photograph, from the Davis Collection, shows a log pond at one of the Davis
Company's sawmills. Log ponds are important parts of sawmills, because they
allow logs to be easily moved to and from areas. At mills where there are log
ponds, the logs are taken from the train and "splashed" into the pond.
Often, logs are sorted into groups in the pond by type, size and grade before
they are taken into the mill. Logs can be moved by one person when floating
in the water; if there is no pond, an entire crew, plus machinery and/or horses
are needed to move the logs.
