Directions for Using This Website
There are two sections of this website: Part 1--Lumber Companies and Logging Camps; Part 2--Harvesting the Hardwoods. Each section can be studied on its own, or both can be used together to form a lesson or homework assignment. Each section has two elements: text and photographs. The photographs (with the exception of the page containing examples of logging families) have their own pages that can be accessed by clicking on the photograph (see example below).
To see an example of a photo page, click on the photograph above.
There is also a terminology page (which can also be accessed from the homepage) that explains the archival terminology that is included in the website, such as collection, Appalachian Photographic Archives, and accession. The terminology page also explains how the photographs have been documented.
If you are using this website as a classroom assignment, there is also a page for teachers and students that contains suggested assignments that can be completed after viewing this website. You should read the information contained in parts 1 and/or 2 before completing these assignments.
There is also a bibliography included. If you are interested in learning more about this subject, these sources are excellent. Many of these sources can be found in the Archives of Appalachia and at Sherrod Library, both part of East Tennessee State University.
