Archives of Appalachia

Donate to the Archives

To build a premier Archive devoted to Appalachia, we depend on the support of individuals who recognize the value of preserving our Appalachian heritage. Such support may come in the form of a donation of personal papers, organizational records, books, recordings, photographs, and other research materials. Assistance may also take the form of a monetary donation, which would be used to purchase materials, provide access to collections, or improve services.

Where we collect

Priority in collecting is given to materials focusing on the southern Appalachian region, particularly within a 100-mile radius of Johnson City, Tennessee. Materials relating to Tennessee and to the greater Appalachian region are given consideration when they meet the study needs of our researchers.

What we collect

We collect materials dating from the settlement of the region to the present. We seek to document the development of the region and preserve the story of the people of Appalachia. This documentation may take the form of family papers, business records, photographs, maps, oral histories, video and film documentaries, as well as digital resources.

Collections and items in the following subject areas are sought for priority gift, purchase, or exchange. Other subjects are considered when appropriate.

Social, economic, and industrial history (mining, lumbering, railroads, etc.)
Folklore (especially music, storytelling, and handicrafts)
Religious practice and experience (church records, snakehandling, etc.)
Local history (Washington County, Tennessee, and surrounding counties)
Regional biography and history
Photographic works on the region
Travel and recreation
Regional literature
Science and technology
Natural history

Making a donation

Donations of research materials are encouraged. Monetary contributions to support the Archives' collections, programs, and services are equally encouraged. Such contributions should be made payable to the ETSU Foundation/Archives of Appalachia Fund. Donations made to Archives may be tax deductible. Please consult your tax advisor for details.
