Guidelines for Submission

For fullest and quickest consideration for WRITERS:

  • Writing can include information gleaned from diaries, letters, and family histories, as well as standard research and reportage.
  • Fiction, news and feature articles, interviews and personal essays generally run between 1,000 and 2,500 words.
  • Clearly label any first-person piece as either fiction or a nonfiction essay.
  • Though we prefer first publication rights on work, we do accept reprints and simultaneous submissions. You need to supply us with signed reprint permission and inform us of other publications considering the work. Acceptance and publication in another Appalachian-focused publication does preclude its use in Now & Then.
  • Reviews are by assignment only and must follow a specified form and be around 500 words maximum. For consideration as a reviewer, send your credentials and two or three sample reviews to the editor’s attention. Reviewers get a contributor’s note and a copy of the publication reviewed. You are also encouraged to bring publications of note to our attention.
  • Include a brief statement of the regional tie-in and your work’s pertinence to the theme.
  • Please submit by e-mail a brief one-page query or the completed manuscript in Microsoft Word document format if it is less than 1,000 words.
  • Include an e-mail and regular mailing address and phone numbers, along with the best times to call, so we can reach you easily.
  • Works will be edited to conform to space and style requirements and to best communicate with Now & Then’s readers. We will do our best to work in consultaion with writers and others providing creative content so that we have a finished product we can all be proud of.
  • If you want an unsolicited manuscript or other material returned, include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with adequate postage.
  • Because Now & Then is part of a nonprofit, educational initiative, payment is modest, generally in the form of a small honorarium and complimentary copies. Bylines and brief writer/contributor bios are given.

You will be notified via e-mail if your query or manuscript meets our needs, and a final deadline and word length will be confirmed at that point. You will, though, need to consider the general deadline and word count specifications as you are considering your proposed project. We will need a short, 3-4 sentences maximum, contributor’s note to include with your submission.

Final copy should meet deadline and length specifications and be sent electronically to nowandthen@etsu.edu with a hard-copy printout follow-up to:
