Publications

-Encyclopedia of Appalachia—The Encyclopedia, which is the most comprehensive reference work on Appalachia ever produced, was compiled by the Center and was published by the University of Tennessee Press in March 2006. Over 1,500 writers compiled some 2,000 articles that look at the region in detail, from Appalachia’s physical landscape to the people of Appalachia—our cultural traditions, our institutions, and our economy. This half-million dollar project received support from many sources, including the Appalachian Regional Commission, the ETSU Foundation, Federal Express, the Governor’s Office of Appalachia in Ohio, K-VA-T Food Corp., the Mooneyhan Family Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Tennessee Valley Authority.

-Now & Then—Published two times a year, Now & Then presents a fresh, revealing picture of life in Appalachia, past and present, through articles, personal essays, fiction, poetry, and photography. Recent issues have explored the themes of Racing in Appalachia, Appalachian youth, Appalachia and the world, fiction, museums and archives, language, health, architecture, and transportation, to name a few.
